Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur is the largest city in the Purvanchal region of the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. Located on the Rapti River in the Terai zone near the Nepal border, the city has a population of approximately 850,000 in the urban area and serves as an important commercial, religious, and administrative center for the vast eastern Uttar Pradesh region and the gateway to Buddhist pilgrimage sites of global significance.
Gorakhpur takes its name from the medieval saint Gorakshanath, or Gorakhdev, a prominent yogi and philosopher associated with the Nath tradition of Hindu spiritualism who is believed to have lived and practiced in the area. The Gorakhnath Math, a major Hindu monastery complex in the city, has been continuously active since medieval times and is today one of the most powerful religious and social institutions in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Math has historically wielded considerable political influence in the region, and the tradition of its head priest or Mahant includes figures who have played important roles in Indian political life.
Gorakhpur occupies a central position in the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit of northern India, situated close to some of the most sacred sites in Buddhist history. Kushinagar, where the historical Buddha is believed to have attained Mahaparinirvana, his final death and liberation, is located approximately 53 kilometers from Gorakhpur. Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, lies just across the Nepal border approximately 120 kilometers away. This proximity makes Gorakhpur an important base for Buddhist pilgrims and scholars visiting these sacred places, and the city receives significant numbers of Buddhist visitors from across Asia.
The city is an important railway junction on the Gorakhpur-Nautanwa route and the Lucknow-Gorakhpur line, with Gorakhpur Railway Station holding the distinction of having what was recognized for many years as the world's longest railway platform at 1,366 meters. This record-breaking platform reflects the enormous passenger traffic that passes through the city as a major hub for population movement across eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.
The Ramgarh Lake and the Geeta Vatika are recreational and cultural spaces within the city, while the Taramandal Planetarium provides educational entertainment. The city's famous Gorakhpur literary tradition has produced significant Hindi and Urdu writers and poets.
DDU Gorakhpur University and several affiliated colleges provide higher education to a large student population from across the region.
Gorakhpur's deep Nath tradition of Hindu philosophy and spirituality, its role as the gateway to Buddhist pilgrimage sites of global importance, its remarkable railway heritage, and its central position in the densely populated and culturally rich landscape of eastern Uttar Pradesh make it a city of genuine significance within the spiritual and cultural geography of the Indian subcontinent.
