Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur is a major city in the Purvanchal region of eastern Uttar Pradesh state, India, located near the border with Nepal in the Terai (foothills) zone. With a population of approximately 700,000, it is one of the largest cities in eastern Uttar Pradesh and serves as an important administrative, commercial, transportation, and religious center for a densely populated agricultural hinterland. The city lies along the Rapti River and is characterized by the flat, fertile plains of the Gangetic basin.

Gorakhpur has a history deeply intertwined with the Nath tradition of Hinduism. The city is named after the legendary saint Gorakshanath (Gorakhnath), a revered figure of the Nath Sampradaya — a Hindu monastic tradition whose influence spread across North India and beyond during the medieval period. The Gorakhnath Temple, one of the most important religious sites in Uttar Pradesh, is located in the city and is the seat of the Gorakhnath Math, a major monastic and educational institution. The temple attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, and the Mahant (head) of the Gorakhnath Math has traditionally held considerable spiritual and political influence in the region — Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is a Mahant of this temple.

Gorakhpur is also associated with the life of Gautama Buddha, as the ancient city of Kushinagar — where the Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (final enlightenment and death) — is located approximately 50 kilometers to the east. This proximity to one of Buddhism's holiest sites gives the broader Gorakhpur region a special significance for Buddhist pilgrims from across the world.

The city is a major railway hub, with Gorakhpur Junction being one of the busiest railway stations in India and the site of the world's longest railway platform (until the record was surpassed). The railway connection has historically been central to the city's role as a transit and commercial hub for the broader Purvanchal and Nepal border region. The city has also gained attention as a production center for goods including readymade garments, and the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Gorakhpur campus has added medical education and healthcare importance to the city.

Gorakhpur has a vibrant cultural scene, with the Ramleela festival celebrations being among the most elaborate in North India. The Nehru Shatabdi Hospital and Gorakhpur University serve the educational and healthcare needs of the region.

Gorakhpur's importance as a Hindu pilgrimage center, its railway connectivity, its proximity to Buddhist sacred sites, and its role as the service capital of densely populated eastern Uttar Pradesh make it a city of considerable religious, commercial, and regional significance in the heart of the Indo-Gangetic Plain.
