Göteborg
Göteborg, known in English as Gothenburg, is Sweden's second largest city and the largest city in Scandinavia after Stockholm and Copenhagen. Located on the southwestern coast of Sweden at the mouth of the Göta River, where it meets the Kattegat strait of the North Sea, the city serves as Sweden's primary port and one of the most important maritime hubs in northern Europe. With a population of approximately 590,000 in the city and over one million in the greater metropolitan area, Göteborg is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city known for its maritime heritage, industrial prowess, vibrant culture, and famously friendly and laid-back atmosphere.
Göteborg was founded by King Gustav II Adolf in 1621, originally as a strategically important port city to give Sweden access to the North Sea without having to pass through the Denmark-controlled strait of Øresund. The city was designed with the help of Dutch engineers, which explains the characteristic Dutch-influenced canal system that still runs through parts of the city center. Göteborg grew rapidly as a trading city, and in the 18th and 19th centuries the Swedish East India Company, headquartered here, made the city one of the most important trading centers in northern Europe, bringing goods from Asia and generating enormous wealth.
The industrial revolution transformed Göteborg into a major center of shipbuilding, manufacturing, and engineering. Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks, the iconic Swedish automotive brands, were both founded in Göteborg in the 1920s and their headquarters and main factories continue to operate in and around the city, making it the center of Swedish automotive manufacturing. SKF, the world's leading bearings manufacturer, is also headquartered in Göteborg, and the broader engineering and high-tech manufacturing sector continues to be a major pillar of the city's economy.
Göteborg is celebrated for its remarkable cultural vitality. The Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History, and the Röhsska Museum of Design and Crafts are among the world-class cultural institutions in the city. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1905, is one of the finest orchestras in Europe. The city has a thriving live music scene, numerous theaters, and one of Sweden's largest film festivals — the Gothenburg International Film Festival, held annually since 1979. The Liseberg amusement park, one of Scandinavia's most popular, draws millions of visitors each year.
The city's food scene is outstanding. Göteborg has a remarkable concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants for a city of its size, and the fresh seafood from the nearby North Sea — particularly the famous west coast shrimp, crayfish, herring, and oysters — forms the basis of a regional cuisine that is renowned throughout Sweden. The fish market at Feskekörka ("Fish Church"), a distinctive 19th-century market hall shaped like a church, is one of the city's most beloved landmarks.
Göteborg Central Station is connected to Stockholm by high-speed rail in approximately three hours, and Göteborg Landvetter Airport is Sweden's second busiest international airport. The city's tram network is one of the oldest and most extensive in Scandinavia, providing an efficient and charming form of urban transportation.
With its maritime history, world-class art scene, engineering legacy, exceptional cuisine, and warm Gothenburg spirit, Göteborg is a city that captivates visitors and residents alike — Sweden's second city in size but, many would argue, first in charm.
