Governador Valadares

Governador Valadares lies in eastern Minas Gerais, on the banks of the Rio Doce about three hundred kilometres from Belo Horizonte and a similar distance from the Atlantic coast at Vitória. The city occupies a warm valley between forested hills, dominated by the granite mass of the Ibituruna peak, which rises more than eleven hundred metres directly above the town. The climate is tropical, with hot humid summers and dry, mild winters.

Around two hundred and eighty thousand people live here, making it one of the largest cities in the interior of the state and the commercial capital of a wide region that extends towards southern Bahia and northern Espírito Santo. Cattle ranching and dairy farming, trade in semi-precious stones, food processing, furniture, clothing, health services and education form the backbone of its economy.

The settlement grew in the early twentieth century around a river crossing and the Vitória to Minas railway, in a frontier zone of Atlantic forest opened up by timber cutters and prospectors. It became a municipality in 1938 and took the name of Benedito Valadares, then governor of Minas Gerais. Rapid growth followed as mica, beryl and gemstones from the surrounding pegmatite deposits found buyers around the world, and during the Second World War the region's strategic minerals attracted American technicians whose presence left an unexpected mark on local history.

Those wartime contacts helped start one of the most remarkable stories of Brazilian migration. From the 1960s onwards tens of thousands of residents left for the United States, above all for Massachusetts, creating a transnational community so strong that Valadares is often called the most American city in Brazil. Remittances shaped whole neighbourhoods, and English-language schools, travel agencies and returning migrants remain a visible part of city life.

The Ibituruna peak has made the city famous among adventure sportsmen. Its launch ramps are considered among the best hang gliding and paragliding sites in the world, and Valadares has hosted world championships that bring pilots from dozens of countries. The summit road also offers panoramic views over the valley, and the surrounding region offers waterfalls, caves and the huge granite monoliths of the Doce valley.

In November 2015 the collapse of a mining waste dam far upstream at Mariana sent a wave of tailings down the Rio Doce, cutting the city's water supply for days and severely damaging the river's ecosystem. The event marked local consciousness deeply and made Valadares a focus of national debate about mining and environmental responsibility.

The city has a lively cultural calendar, with river festivals, rodeos, a municipal theatre and a strong tradition of popular music. Its universities include a campus of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and the well-established Vale do Rio Doce University, which together attract students from across the region.

The BR-116 highway, the Vitória to Minas railway with one of Brazil's last long-distance passenger trains, and a regional airport keep the city well connected.

Governador Valadares is known as a gemstone city, a migration hub and one of the great free-flight capitals of the world.
