Graz
Graz is the capital of the Styria region and the second-largest city in Austria, located in the southeastern part of the country along the Mur River, just 50 kilometers north of the Slovenian border. Often overshadowed by Vienna in the international imagination, Graz is a city of extraordinary character that combines a remarkably preserved medieval and Renaissance old town with a vibrant contemporary cultural scene, earning it the nickname "City of Design."
With a population of approximately 300,000 people, Graz is a lively and youthful city home to six universities and nearly 60,000 students, making it one of the most student-heavy cities in Europe relative to its population. This academic energy infuses the city with creativity, intellectual vitality, and a dynamic arts scene that belies its modest size.
The history of Graz is long and layered. The area has been settled since prehistoric times, but the city grew significantly under the Babenberg and later Habsburg dynasties. It served as the residence city of the inner Austrian Habsburgs from the 15th to the 17th century, during which time many of its finest Renaissance palaces and churches were constructed. The historic old town of Graz was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, recognized for its exceptional architectural heritage and the harmonious blending of styles from Gothic to Baroque to Art Nouveau.
The Schlossberg, a forested rocky hill rising 473 meters above the city center, is Graz's most iconic landmark. Its summit, once fortified but largely demolished by Napoleon in 1809, now offers spectacular panoramic views over the city's terracotta rooftops. The medieval clock tower and bell tower that survived Napoleon's destruction are beloved symbols of Graz. Visitors can reach the top by funicular, lift, or stairs cut through the rock.
The Kunsthaus Graz, a contemporary art museum with its extraordinary alien-like biomorphic facade of blue acrylic glass panels, represents the city's embrace of bold modern architecture alongside its historic heritage. The museum opened in 2003 as part of Graz's year as European Capital of Culture and has become one of the most striking buildings in Austria. The Landesmuseum Joanneum, founded in 1811, is one of the oldest public museums in the world and encompasses natural history, art, and cultural collections.
Graz has an excellent public transportation network including trams, buses, and cycling infrastructure, making it easy to move around the compact city. The main train station connects Graz to Vienna, Salzburg, and international destinations across Europe. The city is also home to the famous Styrian Autumn festival of contemporary art and a thriving food and wine culture rooted in Styrian culinary traditions featuring pumpkin seed oil, local wines, and hearty mountain cuisine.
Graz is a city that rewards exploration and repeat visits. Its combination of UNESCO heritage, dynamic university life, cutting-edge contemporary culture, and superb Styrian cuisine make it one of Central Europe's most underrated and genuinely rewarding destinations for travelers seeking something beyond the obvious tourist trail.
