Greater Noida is a planned city in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, forming part of the National Capital Region that surrounds Delhi. It lies about forty kilometres southeast of central Delhi on the flat alluvial plain between the Yamuna and the Hindon rivers, immediately beyond the older township of Noida. The landscape is level and open, the climate marked by very hot summers, a humid monsoon and cool, hazy winters.

The city was created in 1991 by a dedicated development authority, which laid out an ambitious grid of wide avenues, roundabouts, sector blocks and green belts on what had been farmland. Its resident population is still modest compared with neighbouring cities, numbering in the low hundreds of thousands, but it grows quickly and the daytime population is far larger because of the students, industrial workers and commuters who travel in each day.

Greater Noida has become one of the most important education clusters in northern India. Gautam Buddha University occupies a vast campus laid out around water bodies and Buddhist inspired architecture, and it is joined by Sharda University, Galgotias University, Bennett University, the Noida International University and a large number of engineering, management and design colleges. Tens of thousands of students from across India and from abroad live here, giving parts of the city a distinctly youthful character.

Industry is the other pillar of the local economy. Manufacturing estates produce vehicles, electronics, garments, food products and building materials, and warehousing and logistics have expanded rapidly along the expressways. The India Expo Centre and Mart hosts major trade fairs, while the Buddh International Circuit, a Formula One standard motor racing track designed by Hermann Tilke, staged the Indian Grand Prix between 2011 and 2013 and continues to host national and international motorsport.

Connectivity is the city's great advantage. The Noida Greater Noida Expressway links it to Delhi, the Yamuna Expressway runs south to Agra and the Taj Mahal in around two hours, and the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways allow traffic to bypass the capital. The Aqua Line metro connects the sectors to the Delhi Metro network at Noida, and the new international airport under construction at Jewar, a short distance to the south, is expected to transform the region's economy.

For visitors the attractions are more contemporary than historic. There are large shopping malls, multiplexes, sports complexes, golf courses and landscaped parks, and the Surajpur wetland attracts migratory birds each winter. Traditional sights lie close by, including the Delhi monuments to the northwest and the Mughal cities of Agra and Mathura to the south.

Everyday life reflects the mixed origins of the residents, who come from across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and further afield, and festivals such as Diwali, Holi and Eid are celebrated with enthusiasm in the sector markets.

Greater Noida is important as an example of planned urban growth in modern India, offering space, infrastructure and opportunity on the edge of one of the world's largest metropolitan regions.
