Guatemala City
Guatemala City, known locally as Ciudad de Guatemala, is the capital and largest city of Guatemala, located in a mountain valley in the south-central part of the country at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. With a metropolitan population of approximately 3 million, Guatemala City is the largest city in Central America and serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the nation. The city is surrounded by dramatic volcanic and highland scenery and sits in a region of rich Mayan cultural heritage.
The modern city was founded in 1776 after a series of devastating earthquakes destroyed the previous colonial capital, now known as Antigua Guatemala, located about 45 kilometers to the west. Guatemala City was designed as the new capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala and grew rapidly through the 19th and 20th centuries. The city has experienced significant earthquake damage of its own, most notably in 1917 and 1976, and much of its older architecture was lost or rebuilt as a result.
The Zona Viva (Zone 10) is the city's most modern and cosmopolitan district, featuring upscale hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and an active nightlife scene that attracts visitors and residents alike. In contrast, the historic center (Zona 1) retains some of the colonial character of the city's past, with the Plaza Mayor, the National Cathedral, and the National Palace of Culture — a stunning green stone building that dominates the central square — among the most important civic monuments.
The city has a rich array of museums. The Popol Vuh Museum houses one of the finest collections of pre-Columbian Maya artifacts in the world, including outstanding ceramics and sculptures. The National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology contains important collections from the ancient Maya civilization as well as other indigenous cultures of Guatemala. The Museum of Modern Art and the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles celebrate the artistic heritage of Guatemala's diverse population.
Guatemala City is a deeply multicultural city, home to indigenous Maya communities alongside mestizo and immigrant populations from across the world. The cuisine reflects this diversity, with traditional Guatemalan dishes such as pepián stew, kak'ik turkey soup, and black beans with tortillas available alongside international fare. The Mercado Central, an enormous central market, is a vivid experience of the city's commercial life and culinary culture.
The city is served by La Aurora International Airport and is connected by road to the rest of Central America. As the economic and administrative center of Guatemala, it continues to attract investment and development despite ongoing challenges with inequality and urban planning. With its strategic location, historical layers, and gateway role for exploring Guatemala's extraordinary Maya heritage and natural scenery, the capital remains an essential stop for visitors to Central America.
