Guntur
Guntur is one of the major cities in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, located in the Krishna delta region on the eastern coastal plain. With a population of approximately 730,000, it is the fourth-largest city in Andhra Pradesh and serves as the headquarters of Guntur district and of the Guntur Revenue Division. The city sits on the fertile alluvial plains between the Krishna River to the north and the Gundlakamma River to the south, making it an important center for agriculture and trade in the region.
Guntur has a long history, having been an important center under various dynasties including the Mauryas, Satavahanas, Pallavas, Chalukyas, and later the Vijayanagara Empire, before coming under the control of the Nizams of Hyderabad and subsequently British colonial administration. During the British period, Guntur developed as an administrative and commercial center for the productive agricultural district surrounding it. The French East India Company and later the British East India Company both recognized the strategic and commercial importance of the region.
Guntur is most renowned throughout India and internationally as one of the most important centers of chili pepper (red chili) production and trade in the world. The city hosts Asia's largest chili market, the Guntur chili yard, where millions of bags of red chilies — particularly the fiery Guntur Sannam variety, prized for its intense heat and bright red color — are traded annually. Guntur chilies are exported to dozens of countries and used in food products and spice mixes worldwide. The local cuisine naturally reflects this heritage, with Guntur's spicy Andhra food being among the hottest regional cuisines in India.
The city is also a center of the tobacco industry, with significant tobacco cultivation in the surrounding district and processing facilities in the city. Cotton and food grains are other important agricultural products of the region. The broader economy includes trade, services, and small manufacturing alongside agriculture.
Guntur is home to Acharya Nagarjuna University, one of the prominent universities in Andhra Pradesh, which serves the educational needs of the region. The AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) campus in nearby Mangalagiri has added significant healthcare and medical education capacity to the greater Guntur area. The city is well connected by road and rail, with Guntur Junction being an important station on the South Coast Railway network.
Guntur's significance as the world capital of chili pepper trade, its fertile agricultural hinterland, its historical depth, and its growing educational and healthcare infrastructure make it a city of considerable regional importance in the dynamic and culturally rich landscape of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
