Hanzhong is a prefecture-level city located in the southwestern corner of Shaanxi Province in central China. The Shaanxi Hanzhong Crested Ibis National Nature Reserve protects the last wild population of the Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon), a bird once thought to be extinct. The successful breeding and recovery of this critically endangered species in the Hanzhong area is one of China's most celebrated conservation successes.

The Hanzhong Basin's relatively warm and humid climate supports productive agriculture, with the area known for growing rice, rapeseed, and various vegetables. The annual rapeseed flower blooming season in spring transforms the fields around the city into vast yellow carpets, attracting photographers and tourists. Tea cultivation in the southern hills of Hanzhong produces local varieties of green tea that are increasingly valued by Chinese tea enthusiasts.

High-speed rail and expressways have connected Hanzhong to Xi'an and Chengdu, making it significantly more accessible for visitors.
