Hargeysa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland, a self-declared republic in the northwestern part of Somalia that has maintained de facto independence since 1991. The Hargeysa Cultural Center and the National Museum of Somaliland offer insights into the region's history, literature, and art. The city has a growing literary culture, with the Hargeysa International Book Fair — one of the largest literary events in Africa — attracting writers, scholars, and publishers from across the continent and beyond each year. This cultural dynamism reflects the society's commitment to education and intellectual life even in challenging circumstances.

The prehistoric cave paintings of Laas Geel, located approximately 50 kilometers from Hargeysa, are among the best-preserved rock art sites in Africa, depicting cattle, humans, and wild animals painted thousands of years ago. This archaeological treasure adds an important dimension to the region's heritage and draws researchers and adventurous tourists.

Hargeysa represents an extraordinary story of reconstruction, institution-building, and cultural vitality. Despite operating outside the formal structures of international recognition, the city functions as a genuine capital with courts, schools, hospitals, and democratic processes.
