Hargeysa

Hargeysa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland, a self-declared republic in the northwestern part of Somalia that has maintained de facto independence since 1991. Located in the Woqooyi Galbeed region at an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters above sea level, the city benefits from a cooler climate than much of the Horn of Africa. With a population estimated at over one million people, Hargeysa is the most populous city in Somaliland and serves as its political, economic, and cultural hub.

The city's history is marked by both ancient pastoral traditions and the trauma of the late twentieth century. During the Somali Civil War in 1988, Hargeysa was devastated by aerial bombardment and artillery attacks carried out by the regime of Siad Barre, resulting in massive destruction and the displacement of much of its population. A MiG fighter jet on a plinth in the city center serves as a haunting memorial to that period of destruction and resilience. After the declaration of Somaliland's independence, the city was painstakingly rebuilt and has since emerged as one of the more stable and functional urban centers in the Horn of Africa.

Hargeysa has developed into a remarkably active commercial city despite the absence of international recognition for Somaliland. The city's main market, Waaheen, is one of the largest open-air markets in East Africa, where currency exchange, livestock, electronics, clothing, food, and everyday goods change hands at a lively pace. The Somaliland shilling circulates alongside other currencies, and the city has a functioning mobile banking system that has earned international attention as a model of financial innovation in the region.

The Hargeysa Cultural Center and the National Museum of Somaliland offer insights into the region's history, literature, and art. The city has a growing literary culture, with the Hargeysa International Book Fair — one of the largest literary events in Africa — attracting writers, scholars, and publishers from across the continent and beyond each year. This cultural dynamism reflects the society's commitment to education and intellectual life even in challenging circumstances.

The prehistoric cave paintings of Laas Geel, located approximately 50 kilometers from Hargeysa, are among the best-preserved rock art sites in Africa, depicting cattle, humans, and wild animals painted thousands of years ago. This archaeological treasure adds an important dimension to the region's heritage and draws researchers and adventurous tourists.

Hargeysa represents an extraordinary story of reconstruction, institution-building, and cultural vitality. Despite operating outside the formal structures of international recognition, the city functions as a genuine capital with courts, schools, hospitals, and democratic processes. Its resilience and relative stability make it one of the most compelling and underappreciated cities in all of Africa.
