Hāthazāri
Hāthazāri is an upazila, or sub-district, and its principal town located in the Chittagong District of the Chittagong Division in southeastern Bangladesh. Situated approximately 14 kilometers north of the port city of Chittagong, Hāthazāri lies along the Halda River and is part of the densely populated agricultural and urban area that surrounds Bangladesh's second-largest city. The upazila has a population of over 400,000 people and serves as an important administrative and commercial center for the agricultural communities of the northern Chittagong area.
Hāthazāri holds a place of particular importance in the religious and educational landscape of Bangladesh and the broader South Asian Muslim world. The Hāthazāri Madrasa, officially known as Al-Jamia Al-Islamia, is one of the most significant traditional Islamic educational institutions in South Asia. Founded in 1899, the madrasa follows the Deoband school of Islamic thought and has produced thousands of Islamic scholars who have gone on to serve as religious leaders, educators, and scholars throughout Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and beyond. The institution attracts students from across the region who seek a deep grounding in traditional Islamic sciences, and its influence on religious thought and practice in Bangladesh is considerable. The concentration of religious learning in Hāthazāri gives the town a distinctive character as a center of Islamic scholarship in the country.
The Halda River, which flows near Hāthazāri, is of national ecological significance as one of the few rivers in Bangladesh where the rohu carp spawns naturally. The Halda River fish sanctuary, protecting the spawning grounds of this important freshwater fish, has made the river a subject of conservation attention and scientific study. Local fishermen have for generations collected fertilized eggs from the river during the spawning season, using them to stock fish ponds throughout the region, making the Halda an important resource for aquaculture across a wide area.
The economy of Hāthazāri is primarily agricultural. Rice cultivation is the dominant activity in the surrounding countryside, supplemented by vegetable farming and the cultivation of betel leaf, an important cash crop in this part of Bangladesh. Hāthazāri town itself has an active market where agricultural produce, everyday goods, and manufactured items are traded. Small-scale garment-related businesses and trading enterprises connected to the broader Chittagong economy also provide employment for residents of the area.
Education beyond the religious madrasa system is served by a number of government and private schools, and several colleges affiliated with the University of Chittagong provide higher education opportunities for students from the upazila. Healthcare is provided by an upazila health complex and associated facilities, though residents with more serious medical needs typically access the larger hospitals in Chittagong city.
Transportation connections to Chittagong are good, with road and bus services linking Hāthazāri to the port city and its amenities. The upazila benefits from its proximity to Chittagong, which provides employment, markets, and services to a large portion of the local population who commute to the city for work or commerce. Hāthazāri's distinctive identity is shaped by its role as a center of traditional Islamic learning alongside its agricultural economy and its ecological significance as the home of the famous Halda fish spawning grounds.
