Hengyang is a prefecture-level city located in the central part of Hunan Province in south-central China, situated along the Xiang River. With a population of approximately 7.2 million in the broader prefecture, Hengyang is the second-largest city in Hunan Province after the provincial capital Changsha, and serves as an important regional center for commerce, industry, education, and transportation. The city sits at the foot of Hengshan Mountain, one of the Five Sacred Mountains of China and a place of profound historical and religious significance.

The Hengyang Chemical Industry Park hosts a concentration of chemical manufacturing enterprises. Agriculture in the surrounding prefecture produces rice, vegetables, and various crops that supply both local consumption and regional markets.

The city is home to several universities and colleges, with the University of South China and Hunan Institute of Technology among the most notable. These institutions provide education in engineering, medicine, sciences, and humanities, contributing to a skilled local workforce. Hengyang Normal University trains teachers for the regional education system.

Transportation infrastructure in Hengyang is well developed, with the city serving as a junction for multiple expressways and railway lines connecting Changsha to Guangzhou and other major cities.
