Heyuan

Heyuan is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern part of Guangdong Province in southern China, situated along the Dongjiang (East River) which flows southward to supply fresh water to both Guangzhou and Hong Kong. With a population of approximately 3 million people spread across a largely mountainous territory, Heyuan is known for its scenic natural environment, significant Hakka cultural heritage, and its extraordinary collection of dinosaur fossils. Despite its relatively low profile compared to Guangdong's coastal megacities, Heyuan has a distinct identity that sets it apart within the province.

The Heyuan region has been inhabited for thousands of years, and the broader Dongjiang River valley was an important corridor in the historical migration of the Hakka people — a Han Chinese subgroup who migrated south from central China over many centuries, settling in the mountainous areas of Guangdong, Fujian, and Jiangxi. The Hakka culture, characterized by distinctive architecture, dialect, cuisine, and communal values, is deeply rooted in the Heyuan area. Traditional Hakka walled fortresses known as tulou and wuwei house compounds are found throughout the countryside, serving as communal residences designed to house extended clan families.

Heyuan has gained international recognition in paleontological circles as one of the world's richest sites for dinosaur egg fossils. The region has yielded an extraordinary number of fossilized dinosaur eggs — several thousand have been excavated and are on display in the Heyuan Museum of Dinosaurs, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of dinosaur egg fossils. The fossils, dating from the Cretaceous period, include eggs from multiple species and have contributed significantly to scientific understanding of dinosaur reproduction and Late Cretaceous ecosystems in southern China.

The Xinfeng Lake (Wanlu Lake) reservoir in Heyuan's Xinfeng County is one of the largest reservoirs in Guangdong Province and a major source of water for the Pearl River Delta region. The surrounding lake and mountain landscape is a significant scenic attraction, with boat trips, hiking trails, and resort facilities drawing visitors from Guangzhou and Shenzhen who seek respite from the urban intensity of the coastal megacities.

Agriculture, including rice, fruits, and tea, supports the rural economy of the county-level areas surrounding the city. In recent years, Heyuan has attracted manufacturing investment from companies relocating from the more expensive Pearl River Delta coastal cities, supporting industrial development and employment growth.

Heyuan's unique combination of Hakka cultural heritage, record-breaking dinosaur fossil collections, beautiful reservoir landscapes, and its role as a water source guardian for southern China's most dynamic economic region give it a multidimensional significance that makes it well worth exploring for visitors to Guangdong Province.
