Heze

Heze is a prefecture-level city in the southwestern part of Shandong Province in eastern China, situated on the North China Plain near the borders of Henan and Jiangsu provinces. With a total population of approximately 8.7 million people, making it one of the most populous prefectures in Shandong, Heze is an important agricultural and commercial center known throughout China as the Peony Capital of the World and a significant contributor to the regional economy of the Yellow River Plain.

Heze has a history of over two thousand years, with the city's origins in administrative settlements established during the Han Dynasty in this fertile stretch of the Yellow River flood plain. The area has been subject throughout its history to the periodic catastrophic flooding of the Yellow River, which has both enriched the soils of the surrounding agricultural plain and periodically devastated settlements in the region. Despite these natural challenges, the area developed continuously as an agricultural heartland and commercial center for the southwestern Shandong region.

Heze's most celebrated distinction is its extraordinary peony culture, which surpasses even Luoyang's in terms of the scale and diversity of peony cultivation. The city produces the largest volume of cultivated peonies in China, with hundreds of varieties grown in fields and gardens throughout the prefecture. Each spring during the peony flowering season, the city hosts the Heze International Peony Culture and Tourism Festival, drawing millions of visitors to witness fields and parks ablaze with the spectacular blooms of white, red, pink, purple, and yellow peonies. The peony industry supports not only fresh flower sales but also peony tea, peony oil cosmetics, and dried flower products that are marketed nationally and internationally.

Heze is also nationally recognized for its Shandong Bangzi opera tradition, a vigorous and emotionally powerful style of Chinese traditional opera that features high-pitched singing and dramatic performance styles characteristic of the Zhongyuan cultural region. The city's contribution to this performing arts tradition has been recognized as part of China's intangible cultural heritage.

The city's agricultural economy is one of the most important in Shandong, with production of grain, cotton, vegetables, and fruit, while a growing manufacturing sector produces chemical products, textiles, and agricultural machinery.

Transportation links include expressways connecting Heze to Ji'nan, Zhengzhou, and Nanjing, along with railway services to the national network.

Heze's remarkable peony tradition, its traditional opera culture, its fertile agricultural landscape, and its role as a significant commercial center on the Yellow River Plain make it a distinctive and interesting city that offers visitors a genuine sense of China's deep rural cultural traditions and the beauty of its famous floral heritage.
