Hezhou

Hezhou is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. Bordered by Guangdong Province to the east and Hunan Province to the north, Hezhou occupies a transitional zone between the subtropical south and the mountainous interior. The city has a population of approximately 2 million and is known for its scenic karst landscapes, ethnic minority culture, and its position along an important corridor connecting Guangzhou with southwestern China.

The history of Hezhou is tied to its position along ancient transportation and trade routes linking Guangdong with the inland regions. The city developed during successive Chinese dynasties as an administrative center and commercial waypoint. Today the area retains several ancient villages and traditional architectural sites that reflect the blending of Han Chinese and various southern Chinese minority cultures over the centuries.

Hezhou is blessed with remarkable natural scenery. The Gupo Mountain National Forest Park, covering hundreds of square kilometers of forested peaks and valleys in the southern part of the city, offers hiking trails, waterfalls, and a rich diversity of plant and animal life. The karst topography in parts of Hezhou creates the dramatic limestone peaks and clear rivers that are so characteristic of Guangxi's landscape. Huangyao Ancient Town, a well-preserved ancient settlement in Zhaoping County, is one of the most attractive heritage destinations in the region, with cobbled streets, traditional Qing and Ming Dynasty architecture, and a network of ancient bridges spanning the local river.

The city is also known for its production of high-quality marble, which has given rise to a stone carving and processing industry. Hezhou marble products, ranging from decorative panels to sculptures and functional stonework, are sold across China and exported internationally. The region's mineral resources include nonferrous metals in addition to marble, contributing to a manufacturing base that has grown alongside more traditional agricultural activities.

Agriculture remains an important part of the local economy, with the fertile valleys supporting cultivation of rice, fruit, and vegetables. Hezhou tangerines and navel oranges are particularly well-regarded and exported to markets across southern China. The city's cuisine reflects Cantonese influence while incorporating elements of local Yao and other minority traditions.

Transport connections have improved with highway links to Guangzhou and Guilin, and the city benefits from proximity to the economically dynamic Pearl River Delta region. With its scenic landscapes, well-preserved ancient towns, ethnic minority heritage, and distinctive marble industry, Hezhou is an increasingly attractive destination for domestic tourists seeking the natural beauty and cultural richness of southern China.
