Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a coastal city located in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 200 kilometers south of Bangkok. With a population of around 90,000 inhabitants, Hua Hin has the distinction of being Thailand's oldest and most established beach resort, having been discovered by the Thai royal family and Bangkok high society in the 1920s following the arrival of the railway. Unlike the more intensively developed resort areas of Phuket and Koh Samui, Hua Hin has retained a certain elegance and restraint that makes it particularly popular with families, couples, and those seeking a more tranquil Thai beach experience.
The city's connection to the Thai royal family is its most distinctive characteristic. The Royal Klai Kangwon Palace (Palace Far from Worries) was built in 1926 as the summer residence of King Rama VII and has been used by the royal family ever since. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) spent much of his later life at the palace, and the city has a long-established reputation as the place where the royal family retreats from Bangkok. The palace is closed to the public, but its presence lends Hua Hin a dignified and respectful atmosphere that is perceptible throughout the city.
Hua Hin's main beach stretches for approximately 5 kilometers along the seafront, offering a wide sandy strip backed by hotels, restaurants, and the famous Beach Road. The beach is generally calm and suitable for swimming throughout much of the year, though the monsoon season (May to October) can bring rougher conditions. The historic Railway Hotel, built in 1922 and now operating as the Centara Grand Beach Resort, is one of the most iconic colonial-era hotels in Thailand, its elegant white facade and tropical gardens evoking the atmosphere of the 1920s golden age of travel.
Hua Hin Railway Station, built in the 1920s in the distinctive Thai-European style of the period and painted in cream and red, is one of the most photographed railway stations in Southeast Asia and an important heritage landmark. The Cicada Market, a weekend night market featuring local crafts, art, and food, is among the most sophisticated of its kind in Thailand. The Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road is a lively street food destination offering fresh seafood, Thai dishes, and international options.
The surrounding area offers numerous attractions. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park (Mountain of Three Hundred Peaks), approximately 60 kilometers south of Hua Hin, contains dramatic limestone karst formations, saltwater marshes inhabited by migratory birds, and spectacular caves including the famous Phraya Nakhon Cave with its royal pavilion illuminated by a natural skylight. Sam Roi Yot is one of Thailand's most important wetland habitats. The Kuiburi National Park to the south is one of Thailand's best locations for observing wild elephants.
Hua Hin is also Thailand's premier golf destination, with over 15 world-class courses in the vicinity catering to a large contingent of golf tourists. Kiteboarding is popular at the nearby Khao Tao beach. Hua Hin's combination of royal heritage, beautiful beaches, excellent cuisine, world-class golf, and accessible natural attractions makes it one of Thailand's most complete and refined resort destinations.
