Huangshan

Huangshan is a prefecture-level city located in the southern part of Anhui Province in eastern China, centered around one of the most celebrated mountain landscapes in the world. With a population of approximately 1.4 million people, the city is perhaps better known internationally by the name of its famous mountain — also called Huangshan, or the Yellow Mountains — than as an urban administrative entity. The combination of dramatic granite peaks, ancient pine trees, sea of clouds, and hot springs has made this area one of China's most iconic and visited destinations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

The Huangshan mountains rise to peaks above 1,800 meters and have been celebrated in Chinese art, poetry, and literature for over a thousand years. The great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai and countless subsequent artists and writers were inspired by the mountain's otherworldly scenery. The distinctive appearance of Huangshan — with its gnarled Huangshan Pine trees clinging to cliff faces, floating clouds filling the valleys between granite peaks, and ancient stone steps ascending into mist — has influenced the entire tradition of Chinese landscape painting. To this day, Huangshan remains one of the most painted and photographed natural landscapes in Chinese culture.

The mountain itself offers multiple scenic zones connected by thousands of stone steps and cable cars. The Front Mountain and Back Mountain areas both have distinctive character, with famous peaks including Lotus Peak (the highest at 1,864 meters), Bright Summit Peak, and Heavenly Capital Peak. The Welcoming Guest Pine, a centuries-old gnarled pine tree on the ridge above a dramatic cliff face, has become the symbolic image of the mountain and of Anhui Province. Various hot springs at the mountain's base provide relaxation after the long climbs.

Beyond the mountain, the Huangshan city area encompasses the ancient Huizhou cultural region, which produced one of China's most refined architectural and artistic traditions during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The UNESCO-listed villages of Hongcun and Xidi, located an hour from the city, are among the most perfectly preserved traditional Chinese village landscapes in existence. Their whitewashed walls, black tile roofs, and intricate carved wooden interiors have made them beloved destinations for architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers seeking authentic Chinese village life.

Huizhou cuisine — one of the eight great regional Chinese cuisines — originated in this area and features dishes characterized by preserved foods, strong flavors, and the use of wild mountain ingredients. Smoked pork, stinky mandarin fish, and various bamboo preparations are local specialties.

Huangshan's extraordinary combination of one of China's most iconic mountain landscapes with exceptionally well-preserved ancient villages and a distinctive culinary and artistic tradition makes it one of the most culturally and visually rich destinations in East Asia, drawing millions of visitors from China and around the world each year.
