Huangshi
Huangshi is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Hubei Province in central China, situated along the southern bank of the Yangtze River. With a population of approximately 2.5 million, Huangshi is one of the key industrial cities in Hubei Province and has historically been an important mining and metallurgical center. The city lies about 90 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Wuhan, with which it maintains close economic and transportation ties.
The area around Huangshi has been associated with copper mining since ancient times — some of the earliest known copper mining operations in China took place near the modern city. The Copper Green Mountain National Mine Park (Tonglushan), located within Huangshi's administrative area, encompasses one of the largest ancient copper mining sites in the world, with evidence of continuous mining dating back approximately 3,000 years to the Western Zhou Dynasty. The site has been excavated and preserved as a museum and historical park, offering remarkable insight into ancient Chinese mining and metallurgical technology.
Modern Huangshi developed rapidly in the 20th century as an industrial center focused on iron and steel production, copper smelting, and building materials manufacturing. The city became one of the important industrial bases in central China during the planned economy era, with large state-owned enterprises in mining and metallurgy dominating the economic landscape. In recent decades, like many Chinese resource cities, Huangshi has been working to diversify its economy and develop new industries including new materials, electronics manufacturing, and environmental industries.
The Yangtze River provides both a scenic backdrop and an important transportation corridor for Huangshi. The city has river port facilities that support industrial logistics, and the surrounding area has natural scenic attractions along the river and in the hills of southeastern Hubei. Huangshi City Park and Cihu Lake offer recreational spaces within the urban area.
Huangshi is connected to Wuhan by expressway and high-speed rail, with the Wuhan-Huangshi urban corridor increasingly functioning as an integrated economic zone. Several universities and technical colleges in the city support the skilled workforce needs of Huangshi's industrial economy.
Huangshi's significance as one of China's oldest copper mining centers, its role in the industrial development of central China, and its ongoing economic transformation make it a city with a deep industrial heritage that is working to reinvent itself while preserving the remarkable ancient mining legacy that connects modern Huangshi to the Bronze Age origins of Chinese civilization.
