Ibaraki

Ibaraki is a city in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture in western Japan, occupying the ground between the Yodo River plain and the wooded hills that separate Osaka from Kyoto. It should not be confused with Ibaraki Prefecture, which lies far to the northeast near Tokyo, as the two are written with the same characters but are entirely different places. The city stretches from a dense urban lowland into a hinterland of valleys, bamboo groves and small farming settlements, and the climate is that of the Kinki region, hot and humid in summer, mild in winter.

Around two hundred and eighty five thousand people live in Ibaraki, and its position roughly midway between Osaka and Kyoto has made it a favoured commuter city, with both metropolitan centres reachable in twenty to thirty minutes by rail. This is the foundation of its modern character, though it also has substantial industry in electronics, chemicals, food and precision engineering.

Settlement here is ancient. The area appears in early chronicles, burial mounds from the Kofun period survive in the hills, and Ibaraki Castle, held in the sixteenth century by the warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide, once stood in the town, though only a reconstructed gate and place names remain. The city gives its name to Ibaraki Doji, a legendary demon child of Japanese folklore who is said to have terrorised the capital before being defeated at the Rashomon gate, and the story is celebrated in local festivals and in a statue near the station.

Ibaraki holds a special place in the history of Japanese Christianity. During the centuries when the faith was banned, communities of hidden Christians survived in the hills of the Chibahara and Senbon districts, and in 1919 a remarkable cache of images, documents and devotional objects was discovered in a farmhouse there. These are displayed in the Kirishitan Museum, one of the most important sites for understanding the underground church of the Edo period.

Other attractions include Ibaraki Shrine, the Sōji temple complex, the wooded valley of Ryūō Mountain with its hiking paths, the Ai River cherry blossom walk and the summer Ibaraki Festival with its fireworks and dancing. The city is also known for its jazz street festival, held over several days in autumn, when hundreds of performances take place in halls, cafés and public squares.

Transport is a particular strength, with the JR Kyoto Line, the Hankyu Kyoto Line and the Osaka Monorail all serving the city, and with expressway access and Osaka's two airports within easy reach.

Education has become increasingly prominent. Ritsumeikan University opened a large modern campus here in 2015, joining Otemon Gakuin University and several colleges, and the arrival of thousands of students has revitalised the area around the station with cafés, bookshops and public spaces.

Ibaraki is important as a comfortable and well connected residential city in the Kansai region, and interesting for its folklore, its hidden Christian heritage and its lively cultural calendar.
