Ichalkaranji
Ichalkaranji stands in the southern part of the Indian state of Maharashtra, in Kolhapur district, on the banks of the Panchganga River not far from the border with Karnataka. The town lies on the fertile Deccan plateau at around five hundred and fifty metres above sea level, in a landscape of sugar cane fields, sorghum and irrigated farmland, with the forested ridges of the Western Ghats rising some distance to the west. The climate is warm and dry for most of the year, broken by a reliable monsoon.
Around three hundred thousand people live in the town, which is known throughout India as the Manchester of Maharashtra. Its economy is built almost entirely on textiles. Tens of thousands of power looms operate here, alongside spinning mills, sizing units, dyeing and processing plants and garment workshops, producing cotton shirting, bed linen and dress fabric that is sold across India and exported abroad. The industry draws workers from surrounding districts and neighbouring states, and the rhythm of the looms is heard in every neighbourhood.
The town has an unusual history for the region. From the eighteenth century it was the seat of a princely state ruled by a branch of the Ghorpade family, who held it as a hereditary estate under the Maratha confederacy and later under British suzerainty. The rulers were enlightened patrons who invested in irrigation, schools, a hospital and, decisively, in the textile trade. Handloom weaving had long existed here, and in the early twentieth century the state actively encouraged the introduction of power looms and the first electricity supply, laying the foundations of the modern industry. The state merged with independent India in 1948, and the town continued to grow rapidly with the textile boom.
Ichalkaranji is a working town rather than a tourist centre, but visitors find plenty of interest. The old palace of the rulers, temples such as the Venkateshwar and Datta shrines, the town's Ganesh festival celebrations and the busy cloth markets all give a sense of local life. A visit to a weaving unit shows the scale of the industry at close hand. Nearby lies Kolhapur, one of the great historic cities of Maharashtra, with the famous Mahalaxmi temple, the New Palace museum and the workshops that make the leather sandals known as Kolhapuri chappals, while the hill forts, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries of the Sahyadri range are within a few hours.
Marathi culture is strong here, expressed in the huge public Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, in lavani and folk theatre, in wrestling, which has a passionate following in Maharashtra, and in a spicy cuisine of mutton curries, bhakri flatbread, tambda and pandhra rassa and jaggery sweets.
Roads link the town with Kolhapur, Sangli and the national highway to Bengaluru and Pune, with a railway station nearby and an airport at Kolhapur. The town is home to a well-regarded textile and engineering institute that trains specialists for the industry, along with several colleges.
Ichalkaranji matters as one of the great centres of Indian textile manufacturing.
