Ichihara

Ichihara lies in Chiba Prefecture on the eastern shore of Tokyo Bay, roughly fifty kilometres from central Tokyo. It is the largest city in the prefecture by area, stretching from a heavily industrialised waterfront deep into the wooded hills and river valleys of the Boso Peninsula. The contrast between the two halves is striking, and the climate is mild and maritime, with warm humid summers, mild winters and rarely any lasting snow.

Around two hundred and seventy thousand people live in the city. Its economic importance is considerable, for the reclaimed land along the bay forms part of the Keiyo industrial zone and holds one of the largest concentrations of petrochemical plants in Japan. Refineries, ethylene crackers and chemical works here supply plastics, fuels and industrial materials to the whole country, and the value of Ichihara's industrial output ranks among the highest of any Japanese municipality.

The area has a long history. It was the provincial capital of Kazusa in the ancient period, and the remains of the government complex and the provincial temple have been excavated within the modern city. Burial mounds, old shrines and the Kazusa Kokubunji site preserve traces of that early administrative role.

Ichihara's most remarkable claim to fame is geological. A section of exposed strata along the Yoro River in the city records a reversal of the earth's magnetic field around seven hundred and seventy thousand years ago, and in 2020 it was designated the global reference point for the corresponding stage of geological time, which was named the Chibanian after the prefecture. It is the first geological age to be named after a place in Japan, and the site is now marked and open to visitors.

The rural interior offers the city's best known attractions. The Kominato Railway, a single track line of small diesel cars, winds inland through rice terraces and hills, and its stations become famous each spring when embankments of yellow rapeseed flowers bloom beneath the cherry trees. It connects with the Isumi Railway to cross the peninsula. The Yoro Valley is a gorge of clear pools and waterfalls that draws crowds in late autumn for some of the latest and finest foliage in the Kanto region, and the two tier Awamata Falls is its centrepiece. Nearby are hot spring inns and the Ichihara Lakeside Museum, an art museum in a striking modern building beside the water.

The city also has a zoo, extensive golf courses and bayside parks with views across to Tokyo and Mount Fuji on clear days.

Transport is provided by the JR Uchibo Line along the coast, the Kominato Railway inland, expressways and the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line tunnel and bridge, which connects Chiba directly to Kanagawa across the bay. Haneda Airport is about an hour away.

Colleges and technical institutes serve the industrial workforce, with the universities of Chiba and Tokyo nearby.

Ichihara is important as an industrial powerhouse and appealing for its rural railway, its gorges and its unique place in the geological timescale.
