Ilesa

Ilesa is a city in Osun State in south-western Nigeria, set among the wooded hills and river valleys of the Yoruba interior about thirty kilometres east of Osogbo and a similar distance from Ile-Ife. The land around it is green and undulating, well watered and covered with cocoa farms, palm groves and patches of remaining forest, and the climate is warm and humid throughout the year.

Estimates put the population at somewhere between two and four hundred thousand across the urban area and its adjoining local government districts. Ilesa is the traditional capital of Ijeshaland, one of the historic Yoruba sub-groups, and its importance is above all cultural and political within Yoruba society. Its economy rests on cocoa, kola nut and food crop trading, on small manufacturing, and on the remittances of a famously mobile and entrepreneurial population.

The kingdom of Ijesha traces its foundation to Owa Obokun Ajibogun, a figure remembered as a son of Oduduwa, the ancestral ruler of the Yoruba at Ile-Ife. The title Obokun, meaning the one who fetched seawater, refers to a legendary journey to obtain a cure for Oduduwa's blindness. Ilesa developed as a powerful town, resisted absorption by the Ibadan empire during the nineteenth-century Yoruba wars, and played a notable role under the war leader Ogedengbe, whose defence of Ijesha independence is still celebrated. Christianity and Western education arrived early through missionary schools, and the town became known for producing lawyers, doctors and civil servants in disproportionate numbers.

The palace of the Owa Obokun, the traditional ruler, is the focal point of the town, with its courtyards and carved posts, and the surrounding market is one of the busiest in the region. Nearby lies the Erin Ijesha waterfall, also known as Olumirin, a series of stepped cascades in forested hills that is among the best-known natural attractions in south-western Nigeria. The gold-bearing hills at Itagunmodi have attracted mining for generations and remain a source of both wealth and controversy.

Ijesha cultural life is expressed through festivals such as Iwude Ogun, when the town honours its history with drumming, masquerades and processions to the palace, and through a strong tradition of Yoruba drumming and praise poetry. Ilesa is also noted across Nigeria for the quality of its schools, several of them founded before independence, and for a diaspora that maintains close ties with home.

Roads connect the city to Ilé-Ifè, Akure and Osogbo, and it lies on the route between Lagos and the eastern states, so commercial traffic is heavy. Most travellers use the airports at Akure or Ibadan, and local transport depends on shared taxis and motorcycles.

Higher education includes Wesley University and a number of colleges and health training institutions, with the major universities of Ile-Ife and Akungba within reach.

Ilesa is significant as a proud Yoruba kingdom that has kept its traditional institutions intact while investing heavily in education, and its waterfalls and hill country make it one of the more attractive corners of southern Nigeria.
