Indaiatuba
Indaiatuba is a city in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo in south-eastern Brazil, about one hundred kilometres north-west of the state capital and a short drive from Campinas. It stands on gently rolling land at around six hundred metres above sea level, in a region of former coffee and sugar estates now largely given over to industry, and its name comes from the indaia palm that once grew abundantly along the local streams.
Roughly two hundred and seventy thousand people live in Indaiatuba, and the population has grown quickly over recent decades. The city is regularly ranked among the best places to live in Brazil, with high scores for education, sanitation, safety and household income, and it has become a favoured address for professionals working across the Campinas metropolitan region. Its industrial districts host manufacturers of vehicles, machinery, electronics, packaging and precision components, many of them subsidiaries of international groups attracted by the location, the skilled workforce and the proximity of Viracopos International Airport, one of the busiest cargo hubs in Latin America.
The settlement grew around a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria, built in the early nineteenth century on land donated by a local farmer, and it was raised to the status of a town in 1859. Coffee brought the first wave of wealth, and the railway that arrived in the 1870s connected the district to the port of Santos. Waves of Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German and later Japanese immigrants settled in the surrounding countryside, and their descendants still shape the food, festivals and family names of the city. Industrial development began in earnest in the second half of the twentieth century, transforming a quiet agricultural town into a manufacturing centre.
Indaiatuba is known for the amount of public space it maintains. The Parque Ecologico Municipal, with its lake, walking trails and playgrounds, is the most popular open space, while the Parque dos Indaias and the Bosque do Saber, which combines a small zoo with an educational garden, are busy at weekends. The Museu da Agua explains the history of local water supply, the Casa Cultural and the Ecological Park amphitheatre host concerts and exhibitions, and the Praca Prudente de Moraes with its churches and shaded benches remains the traditional heart of the town. The Videira Complex and modern shopping centres serve as gathering points, and the surrounding countryside offers rural inns, waterfalls and cycling routes.
Local culture mixes country music traditions of the Sao Paulo interior with the international influences brought by the many foreign companies based here, and the calendar includes agricultural shows, food festivals and a well supported balloon and aviation scene. Several private universities and technical colleges, along with senior schools linked to Brazilian industry training bodies, provide higher education, and highways such as the Santos Dumont and Bandeirantes routes give quick access to Campinas and Sao Paulo.
Indaiatuba is important as a prosperous industrial city that has managed to combine rapid economic growth with an unusually high quality of everyday life.
