Isiro
Isiro stands in the far north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, capital of the province of Haut-Uele, on the transitional belt where the great equatorial rainforest gives way to wooded savanna. It lies at around seven hundred metres above sea level, which tempers the equatorial heat, and rain falls through most of the year, keeping the surrounding countryside intensely green. Kisangani lies far to the south-west and the border with South Sudan and Uganda to the north and east.
Estimates put the population somewhere between two hundred and two hundred and fifty thousand, though the figure is uncertain in a region where censuses are rare. The economy rests on agriculture and small-scale mining. Coffee, palm oil, rice, cassava, groundnuts and bananas are grown in the surrounding districts, while gold and diamonds are worked by artisanal miners in the river valleys. Trade, transport and the presence of provincial administration, church institutions and humanitarian organisations account for much of the salaried employment in the town itself.
The settlement was established during Belgian colonial rule and was known for many years as Paulis, named after a colonial officer, before it was renamed Isiro in 1966. It owed its early importance to the narrow-gauge railway built inland from Aketi on the Itimbiri River, which made it the commercial terminus for a vast agricultural hinterland of cotton, coffee and palm produce. The town gained international attention in 1964, when Belgian paratroopers intervened during the Simba rebellion. The decades since have been difficult, with the collapse of the railway, the decay of roads and the wider conflicts of the eastern Congo all affecting daily life, yet Isiro has remained the administrative and religious focus of the region.
Isiro is best known as a centre of Mangbetu culture. The Mangbetu are celebrated for their architecture of long, high-roofed halls, for finely carved harps and pottery topped with human heads, and for a courtly artistic tradition that fascinated early European travellers. Their music, dance and craftwork can still be seen at ceremonies and in the workshops of the region. The Catholic cathedral, the market at the heart of town and the wide avenues laid out in colonial times are the main landmarks, while the surrounding forests, the Bomokandi and Nepoko rivers and the distant Garamba National Park, one of the oldest protected areas in Africa, define the natural setting.
Lingala, Swahili, Mangbetu, Zande and French are all heard in the streets, reflecting a genuinely multilingual population. Matari airport provides the most reliable link with the rest of the country, since roads are often impassable in the rainy season, and motorcycles serve as the main form of local transport. Teacher training institutes, a technical institute and a university centre linked to national institutions offer higher education, and church-run schools and hospitals play a central role in the life of the province.
Isiro is important as the administrative capital of Haut-Uele and as the cultural heart of the Mangbetu people.
