Current Time in Itagüí, Colombia

Itagüí lies in the Aburrá Valley in the Colombian department of Antioquia, immediately south of Medellín and firmly part of that city's continuous urban area. Hills covered in eucalyptus and pine rise on either side of the valley, and the Medellín River runs along its eastern edge. At around fifteen hundred metres above sea level the town enjoys the mild, spring-like climate for which the region is famous, with warm days and cool evenings all year round.

Roughly two hundred and eighty thousand people live within a municipality that is one of the smallest in area in the whole department, which makes Itagüí extremely densely built. It is also one of the most industrialised towns in Colombia. Textile mills, clothing factories, food processing plants, chemical works, printing houses and furniture workshops fill entire neighbourhoods, and the local economy is closely tied to the wider manufacturing and export sector of the Medellín region.

Indigenous Aburrá communities lived in the valley long before the Spanish arrived, and the name Itagüí is generally thought to come from their language. A settlement grew here in the eighteenth century around a chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian, and the town was formally established in 1743 before becoming an independent municipality in 1832. For most of the nineteenth century it remained a farming village supplying Medellín with vegetables, fruit and firewood. Industrialisation transformed it after the 1930s, and the population multiplied as workers arrived from the Antioquian countryside.

The centre is arranged around a leafy main square overlooked by the parish church of San Sebastián. The most popular open space is Ditaires Park, a large recreational area with sports fields, swimming pools, gardens and shaded walking paths, which serves as the green lung of the town. The modern Plaza de la Música hosts concerts and public events beside a striking cultural centre, while the surrounding hills offer viewpoints over the whole valley. Local markets and the busy commercial streets around the metro station give a good sense of everyday life.

Antioquian culture is strongly felt here, from the accent and the music to the food. Visitors can try bandeja paisa, arepas, sancocho and pastries in neighbourhood bakeries, and the town holds its own annual festivals celebrating industry, commerce and local traditions, with parades, craft fairs and concerts. Football is followed passionately, and Itagüí has fielded professional clubs of its own.

Public transport is excellent by regional standards. Line A of the Medellín Metro serves the town directly, linking it in minutes to the city centre and connecting with cable cars, tram and bus rapid transit lines elsewhere in the valley. Several universities and technical institutes have campuses in the municipality, and students also travel easily to the large universities of Medellín.

Itagüí is important as an industrial engine of Antioquia and as a place where visitors can see the working, everyday side of Colombia's second largest urban region.
