Ixtapaluca

Ixtapaluca is a city and municipality in the State of Mexico, lying on the south-eastern edge of the Mexico City metropolitan area. It occupies the ground where the flat basin of the old lake bed meets the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and on clear days the snow-capped volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl rise directly above the town. The name comes from Nahuatl and refers to salty water on the land, a reminder of the lake that once covered the valley.

More than half a million people live in the municipality, and the number continues to grow. Ixtapaluca is best understood as a dormitory city: most residents commute into Mexico City for work, and the town's principal function is to house them. Local employment comes from commerce, transport, food processing and a growing service sector, along with a large regional specialist hospital.

The area was settled long before the Spanish arrival. The archaeological site of Acozac, with its circular temple platform and ball court, belonged to a pre-Hispanic town linked to the Acolhua and later to the Aztec state, and Ixtapaluca appears in colonial records as an encomienda granted soon after the conquest. It remained a farming district of maize fields and haciendas into the twentieth century. Everything changed from the 1990s onwards, when developers built vast estates of small identical houses on the former fields, most famously at San Buenaventura, whose endless rows of pastel roofs have been photographed as an emblem of Mexican mass housing.

Landmarks are modest. The Acozac pyramid, the colonial parish church of San Jacinto in the old centre, and the eighteenth-century haciendas scattered through the municipality give a sense of the earlier town. The real attraction lies in the mountains above, where the pine forests of Río Frío offer cool air, hiking and weekend cabins, and where the Izta-Popo national park begins. The old Puebla road, which climbs through the pass used since colonial times, passes right through the district.

Cultural life is anchored in neighbourhood and parish. Patron saint festivals bring fireworks, processions and food stalls, and the traditional Carnival of Ixtapaluca features dance groups in elaborate costume. Markets sell pulque, barbacoa cooked in earth ovens, and produce from the surrounding farmland. Football pitches, community centres and evangelical and Catholic congregations organise much of daily social life, and residents have built strong local associations in neighbourhoods that were originally handed over with few services.

Transport defines the city's rhythm. The federal and toll highways between Mexico City and Puebla pass through, carrying heavy traffic, and thousands of residents rely on buses and shared vans that feed into the metro and the Chalco cable car system. A suburban rail extension towards the region has been repeatedly proposed.

Education includes technological institutes, preparatory schools and university extension campuses, with the major universities of Mexico City accessible by public transport.

Ixtapaluca is significant as a case study in how Latin American cities grow, where volcano views, pre-Hispanic ruins and enormous new housing estates exist side by side.
