Jālna

Jalna is a city in the Marathwada region of the Indian state of Maharashtra, standing on the Kundalika River on the dry basalt plateau of the Deccan. It lies about sixty kilometres east of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad, and serves as the headquarters of Jalna district. The surrounding country is semi-arid, with black cotton soil that turns fertile after the monsoon and orchards of sweet lime that give the district a reputation across western India.

Roughly four hundred thousand people live in the city and its immediate surroundings. Jalna matters far beyond its size for two reasons. It is one of the largest steel re-rolling centres in Maharashtra, producing reinforcement bars and other structural steel for construction across the country, and it is the acknowledged seed capital of India, home to major hybrid seed companies whose research farms develop cotton, vegetable and cereal varieties sown by farmers from Gujarat to Andhra Pradesh.

The town has a long history as a market and garrison settlement. It grew under the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals, and traces of that period survive in the old fort known as Mastgad, in the Jama Masjid and in the domed tombs scattered through the older quarters. For more than two centuries Jalna belonged to the dominions of the Nizam of Hyderabad, and it joined the Indian union only in 1948, when the princely state was absorbed. The district itself was carved out of the neighbouring one in 1981, and the city has expanded rapidly since.

Visitors usually begin with the temples. The Anandi Swami temple in the heart of town draws pilgrims for its blend of Maratha and Islamic architectural detail, while the goddess shrine at Matsyodari, near Ambad, sits on a hill said to resemble a fish and fills with worshippers during Navratri. The Ganesh temple at Rajur is counted among the region's important shrines, and the village of Jamb, birthplace of the seventeenth-century saint and poet Samarth Ramdas, lies within the district. The rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora, two of India's greatest monuments, are within a few hours by road.

Jalna sits on the railway line between Secunderabad and Manmad, with direct trains to Mumbai, Nagpur and Hyderabad, and the Samruddhi Expressway has cut travel time to Mumbai and Nagpur dramatically. An inland container depot links local exporters to the ports of the west coast. Colleges affiliated to the regional university teach engineering, pharmacy, agriculture and the arts, and agricultural research stations serve the surrounding farm economy.

Daily life revolves around the grain and cattle markets, the steel yards on the outskirts and the seasonal rhythm of sowing and harvest. Water scarcity remains a persistent challenge, and the district has invested heavily in watershed and conservation work.

Jalna is a working city rather than a showpiece, but it is a useful gateway to Marathwada and an important engine of India's steel and seed industries.
