Jardim Sao Luis

Jardim Sao Luis is a district in the southern zone of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, part of the M Boi Mirim subprefecture. It spreads across hills between the Guarapiranga reservoir and the older suburbs closer to the centre, and with well over a quarter of a million residents it is one of the most populous districts in the largest city of the southern hemisphere.

The area was rural until the middle of the twentieth century, when Sao Paulo's explosive industrial growth pushed settlement outwards. Families arriving from the north-east of Brazil and from the interior of the state bought or occupied lots on the periphery and built their own homes, expanding them room by room over the years. The result is a dense, largely self-constructed city of two and three-storey houses, steep side streets, small shops and workshops, with newer public housing estates and community facilities inserted more recently.

Water gives the district its geography. The Guarapiranga reservoir on its western edge supplies drinking water to millions of people in the metropolitan region, and its protection has been a constant issue, balancing housing needs against the quality of the catchment. The reservoir also provides the area's main open space, with the Guarapiranga park offering sports courts, cycling paths and shaded lawns along the shore, while Parque Santo Dias and smaller squares serve the neighbourhoods inland.

Culturally the district belongs to one of the most creative parts of Brazil. The southern periphery of Sao Paulo is the birthplace of Brazilian rap and hip hop, and its poetry slams, community libraries, sarau evenings in bars, street dance groups and independent record labels have produced artists known throughout the country. Community radio, theatre collectives and church groups are strong, and public cultural centres known as CEUs, which combine schools, theatres, swimming pools and libraries in a single campus, have made a visible difference in the area.

Most working residents commute long distances to jobs elsewhere in the city, and transport has improved considerably. A dedicated bus corridor runs along the main avenue towards the centre, the terminus of one of the metro lines is a short ride away at Capao Redondo, and an extensive municipal bus network links the district to the rest of Sao Paulo, though journeys of an hour or more each way remain common.

Public schools, technical colleges, health clinics and a hospital serve the population, and social projects run by residents themselves address education, sport and job training. Challenges of housing quality, drainage, violence and unequal services persist, and local associations have a long record of campaigning on them.

Jardim Sao Luis is not a tourist destination, but it is one of the places where the real Sao Paulo lives, works and creates, and it is essential to understanding the scale and vitality of the city.
