Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is a city in the Province of Cádiz in Andalusia, southwestern Spain, situated on rolling hills in the sherry-producing heartland of the Marco de Jerez. The largest city in the province and the birthplace of two of Spain's most distinctive cultural exports — sherry wine and flamenco — Jerez is a city of deep Andalusian character, combining outstanding architecture, world-class equestrian culture, and a vibrant living tradition of music and wine.

With a population of approximately 215,000, Jerez de la Frontera is an important regional center for agriculture, tourism, and commerce. The city's economy has historically revolved around the production of sherry (Jerez in Spanish, Sherry in English — the word itself derives from the city's name), a fortified wine produced in the surrounding Albariza chalk soils from Palomino and Pedro Ximénez grapes. The bodegas (wineries) of Jerez — González Byass, Lustau, Sandeman, Pedro Domecq, and many others — produce wines exported around the world and open to visitors for tours and tastings.

Jerez is widely considered the cradle of flamenco, particularly the deep, soulful style known as flamenco jondo. The Gypsy (Romani) quarters of Santiago and San Miguel have nurtured generations of flamenco artists, and the city's flamenco festival Jerez de la Frontera Festival is one of the most important in the world. The Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, housed in a beautiful palace in the Barrio de Santiago, is the national research and documentation center for the art form and offers free audiovisual presentations of flamenco styles and history.

The Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre (Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art) is another pillar of Jerez's identity. Its famous spectacle, Cómo Bailan los Caballos Andaluces (How the Andalusian Horses Dance), choreographed equestrian performances set to music, is among the most acclaimed equestrian shows in the world. The School also hosts an annual horse fair, the Feria del Caballo, one of the most elegant events in Andalusia, where riders in traditional Andalusian costume parade on magnificent horses.

The historic city center contains the Alcázar of Jerez, a well-preserved Almohad-era fortress with a mosque converted to a Christian chapel, and the Jerez Cathedral, a large 17th-century structure of mixed Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. The Barrio de Santiago, with its low whitewashed houses and intimate plazas, is the most atmospheric quarter for experiencing flamenco culture firsthand. The International Circuit of Jerez hosts motorcycle racing events, including the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Jerez is connected to Cádiz (about 35 kilometers) and Seville (about 90 kilometers) by road and rail. Jerez Airport handles flights to Spanish and European destinations. The A4 motorway provides fast access to both Seville and the coast.

Jerez de la Frontera is a city of exceptional cultural vitality, where the pleasures of fine wine, passionate music, and magnificent horses come together in one of Andalusia's most authentic urban environments.
