Ji’an

Ji'an is a prefecture-level city located in the central-western part of Jiangxi Province in southern China. The city administers a large area with a population of approximately 4.5 million across its districts and counties, making it one of the more populous cities in Jiangxi. Situated in a valley along the Gan River, Ji'an benefits from a subtropical climate and fertile agricultural land that has sustained its population for thousands of years. The city is recognized both for its deep historical significance in modern Chinese history and for its rich cultural and natural heritage.

Ji'an holds a place of unique importance in the founding narrative of the People's Republic of China. The Jinggang Mountains, located within the city's administrative boundaries, are revered as the cradle of the Chinese revolutionary movement. It was here in 1927 that Mao Zedong and Zhu De established the first rural revolutionary base of the Chinese Communist Party following the setbacks of the urban uprisings. The Jinggang Mountains became the model for the strategy of rural revolution that ultimately led to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, and they remain a destination of profound political and historical significance for visitors from across China.

The Jinggang Mountains Scenic Area is now a UNESCO-recognized site of natural and cultural importance. Beyond its revolutionary heritage, the mountains offer spectacular natural scenery including dramatic peaks, ancient forests, waterfalls, and a rich biodiversity that attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts. Numerous memorial halls, museums, and revolutionary sites throughout the area provide extensive historical context for the events that unfolded here nearly a century ago.

Ji'an also has deep roots in classical Chinese civilization. During the Song dynasty, the region produced a remarkable number of eminent scholars, poets, and officials who distinguished themselves in the imperial civil service examinations. This tradition of scholarly achievement is commemorated at the Luling Cultural Center and reflected in the many ancient academies and historic buildings preserved across the city. The city's association with the Song dynasty intellectual tradition gives it cultural prestige that complements its revolutionary heritage.

The local economy is supported by agriculture, with rice, citrus fruits, and other subtropical crops cultivated extensively in the river valleys. Manufacturing, including electronics assembly, paper production, and building materials, has grown as an economic pillar. The scenic areas and red tourism related to the revolutionary history attract millions of visitors annually, making tourism a significant component of the local economy.

Transportation links including railways and expressways connect Ji'an to Nanchang, the provincial capital, and to neighboring provinces. The city's combination of revolutionary heritage, natural scenery, and classical cultural significance make it one of the most multidimensional destinations in Jiangxi Province, appealing to a wide range of travelers interested in China's history, nature, and culture.
