Jiaojiang
Jiaojiang is a district and the urban core of Taizhou, a prefecture-level city in Zhejiang Province on the eastern coast of China. Located along the Jiaojiang River estuary where it meets the East China Sea, the area benefits from a maritime climate and has historically been oriented toward fishing, maritime trade, and coastal commerce. With a population of approximately 700,000 in the district and over six million in the greater Taizhou area, Jiaojiang serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of one of Zhejiang's most dynamic and entrepreneurially oriented regions.
Taizhou and Jiaojiang are renowned throughout China as a hotbed of private entrepreneurship. The region began developing its private economy in the 1970s and 1980s — before China's formal opening-up — through family workshops and small-scale manufacturing that operated in a gray area of economic policy. This bold entrepreneurial spirit created a thriving local economy and gave rise to many successful private enterprises. The Taizhou model of economic development, based on grassroots private enterprise rather than state-led investment, became influential in shaping China's broader economic reform story.
The city has a strong tradition in manufacturing, particularly in pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, plastics, and electrical equipment. Taizhou is one of China's most important pharmaceutical manufacturing bases, home to numerous companies that produce medicines and medical devices both for the domestic market and for export. The nearby port facilities support the export-oriented nature of the local economy and connect the region to global markets.
Jiaojiang's location on the coast provides natural scenic beauty, and the surrounding area includes tidal flats, waterways, and islands that are characteristic of Zhejiang's irregular coastline. The Jiaojiang River estuary ecosystem supports fisheries that have sustained local communities for generations. Seafood remains central to the local cuisine, with dishes featuring freshly caught fish, crab, shrimp, and various shellfish that reflect the city's maritime character.
The city has invested in improving urban infrastructure, parks, and cultural facilities in recent years. The Taizhou Museum offers exhibitions on local history, culture, and the regional natural environment. Educational institutions and research centers have developed alongside the pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries, supporting innovation and workforce development.
Jiaojiang's story as the center of Taizhou's remarkable private-sector economy is one of the most instructive chapters in China's economic transformation. Its combination of entrepreneurial culture, coastal geography, and industrial dynamism makes it an important, if underappreciated, city in understanding how China's economic miracle was built from the grassroots up.
