Jodhpur
Jodhpur is the second-largest city in the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India, located at the edge of the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert. With a population of approximately 1.3 million, Jodhpur serves as an important administrative, commercial, and tourist center for western Rajasthan. The city is famously known as the Blue City, after the distinctive blue color used to paint the houses of the old city, which creates a dramatic and instantly recognizable visual landscape when viewed from the imposing hilltop Mehrangarh Fort that dominates the cityscape.
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs, who chose a rocky outcrop rising 150 meters above the surrounding plains as the site for a new fortress and capital for the Marwar Kingdom. The Rathores were one of the most powerful Rajput clans, and under their rule Jodhpur developed into one of the most prosperous kingdoms in Rajputana, controlling important trade routes between Delhi and Gujarat. The Marwar rulers were known as fierce warriors and also as patrons of art, music, and architecture.
Mehrangarh Fort is unquestionably the most spectacular attraction of Jodhpur and one of the most impressive fortresses in India. Rising majestically from its rocky base, the fort's massive walls and elaborately decorated palaces within — adorned with exquisite jharokha (latticed window) carvings and mirror work — speak to the wealth and artistry of the Rathore rulers. The fort museum houses an outstanding collection of royal artifacts including palanquins, elephant howdahs, miniature paintings, and weaponry. The view from the fort walls over the blue city below and the surrounding desert landscape is truly breathtaking.
The Jaswant Thada, a white marble cenotaph built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, is a serene and beautiful monument set in a garden overlooking a small lake. The Umaid Bhawan Palace, a magnificent Art Deco palace built between 1929 and 1943 and still partly occupied by the Jodhpur royal family, is one of the grandest residences in India and houses a hotel and museum. The bustling Sardar Market and the covered Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) market area are the vibrant commercial hearts of the old city, offering everything from spices and textiles to handicrafts and street food.
Jodhpur is known for its distinctive cuisine, particularly the Mirchi Bada (deep-fried chili fritter), Mawa Kachori (sweet pastry filled with rich khoya), and the famous Makhaniya Lassi (buttery yogurt drink). The city is also renowned for its textiles, leather goods, and carved furniture — the traditional Jodhpur-style breeches (jodhpurs), now used internationally for equestrian sports, take their name from the city.
Jodhpur is connected by air to Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur, and has good rail connections across Rajasthan and beyond. With its extraordinary fort, blue-painted cityscape, desert setting, royal heritage, vibrant bazaars, and distinctive cuisine, Jodhpur is one of the most captivating and uniquely beautiful cities in all of India.
