Jundiaí

Jundiaí is a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo in south-eastern Brazil, lying about sixty kilometres north-west of the state capital on the road towards Campinas. It sits in a valley beneath the Serra do Japi, a forested mountain range that rises directly behind the town and forms one of the most important remnants of Atlantic forest in the region. Vineyards and orchards cover the hillsides on the city's edge.

The population is around four hundred and forty thousand. Jundiaí has one of the strongest economies in the Brazilian interior, combining industry, logistics and agriculture. Its position on the main highways between São Paulo and Campinas has made it a national distribution hub, with warehouses and technology companies clustered along the corridor, while the surrounding countryside remains famous for grapes and strawberries.

The settlement was founded in 1655 by bandeirantes moving inland from São Paulo, and it grew as a stopping point on the route to Minas Gerais. Its transformation came with coffee. The railway from Santos reached Jundiaí in 1867, making the town the transfer point between the English-built Santos to Jundiaí line and the Paulista railway that continued into the coffee districts. This brought wealth, workshops and a wave of Italian immigrants whose descendants planted the vineyards and shaped the local culture. Industrialisation followed in the twentieth century, and the city has since diversified into electronics, pharmaceuticals and food processing.

The Serra do Japi is the outstanding attraction, a biological reserve of dense forest with trails, waterfalls and viewpoints, home to monkeys, ocelots and hundreds of bird species, and protected by law from development. In the city itself the old railway complex has been converted into a cultural centre and museum, the Parque da Uva hosts the grape festival, and the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora do Desterro faces the central square. The Parque Comendador Antônio Carbonari and the reservoir at Represa de Jundiaí provide walking and boating close to the centre.

Italian heritage runs through local life. The Festa da Uva, held every year since 1934, celebrates the grape harvest with wine, food and processions, and small family wineries in the Caxambu and Ivoturucaia districts welcome visitors along a rural tourism route. Restaurants serving cantina food, strawberry farms open to pickers, and a busy calendar of concerts and theatre give the city an unusually comfortable quality of life, reflected in consistently high rankings for human development among Brazilian cities.

Transport is a major advantage. The Anhanguera and Bandeirantes highways pass through, the CPTM suburban railway runs commuter trains to São Paulo, and Viracopos International Airport at Campinas is about thirty minutes away. A cargo terminal and dry port handle international freight.

Education includes the Jundiaí medical school, a campus of the federal university network, technical colleges and several private universities serving the region.

Jundiaí is significant as a prosperous city that has kept its forest and its vineyards while becoming a centre of Brazilian logistics and industry, offering visitors mountain trails and wine country within an hour of São Paulo.
