Kaesŏng

Kaesŏng, also romanized as Gaeseong or Kaesong, is an ancient and historically extraordinary city located in the southwestern part of North Korea, near the border with South Korea along the edge of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Once the illustrious capital of the Goryeo dynasty — one of the most significant kingdoms in Korean history — Kaesŏng is celebrated as one of the most historically rich cities on the entire Korean Peninsula. Its population is estimated at between 200,000 and 300,000 people.

The history of Kaesŏng spans more than a thousand years. Founded as the city of Songak, it became the capital of the Goryeo Kingdom in 935 AD and served in that role for nearly five centuries until the Joseon dynasty relocated the capital to Hanyang — present-day Seoul — in 1392. During the Goryeo era, Kaesŏng was a vibrant center of East Asian culture, international trade, Buddhism, and artistic achievement. The name "Goryeo" itself is the historical source of the English word "Korea," giving Kaesŏng a special place in the origins of Korean national identity.

The Kaesŏng Historic Monuments, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, represent the city's most precious legacy. This collection includes the Koryo Museum — housed in the former Sungkyunkwan Confucian academy, one of the most beautiful complexes of traditional Korean architecture — as well as royal tombs of Goryeo kings, stone pavilions, fortress walls, and ornate gate towers. The Pakyon Waterfall, located near the city, is considered one of the most celebrated natural landmarks in the region and has inspired Korean poets and painters for centuries.

Culturally, Kaesŏng was historically renowned for producing distinctive goods of extraordinary refinement. Goryeo-era celadon pottery from this region — celebrated for its subtle jade-green glaze and intricate inlaid designs — is considered among the finest ceramic art ever produced anywhere in Korea. The city also remains a major center of Korean ginseng cultivation, a tradition that has persisted for centuries and is closely associated with the Kaesŏng name both domestically and internationally.

Transportation links Kaesŏng to Pyongyang by both rail and road. The Kaesŏng Industrial Complex, established through inter-Korean cooperation and operational from 2004 to 2016, brought South Korean companies and workers to the city in a remarkable experiment in cross-border economic collaboration before its ultimate closure due to political tensions.

Educationally, Kaesŏng has institutions that serve the local population and promote Korean heritage and history within the context of North Korean society and education.

Kaesŏng stands as a living monument to Korea's shared and ancient historical heritage. Its UNESCO-recognized monuments, royal Goryeo legacy, and proximity to the inter-Korean border make it one of the most historically and politically significant cities on the Korean Peninsula — a place where the weight of a thousand years of civilization is felt at every turn.
