Kalaburagi

Kalaburagi, formerly known as Gulbarga, is a major city located in the northern part of the state of Karnataka in southern India. As the headquarters of Kalaburagi District and the Kalyana Karnataka region, the city is the most important urban center in the northern Karnataka area, with a population of approximately 700,000 people. The city lies on the Deccan Plateau at an elevation of about 450 meters, in the Krishna-Bhima doab region that was historically one of the most fought-over territories of medieval South India. Kalaburagi serves as the administrative, commercial, and cultural hub for a large semi-arid region with deep historical significance.

The history of Kalaburagi is extraordinarily rich, particularly in the medieval period. The city served as the first capital of the Bahmani Sultanate, one of the most powerful Muslim kingdoms of the Deccan, which was established in 1347 after breaking away from the Delhi Sultanate. The Bahmani kings made Kalaburagi their capital for several decades before moving to Bidar, and the city retains magnificent monuments from this era. The Gulbarga Fort, with its impressive walls and bastions, and the Jama Masjid within the fort complex, are among the finest examples of Bahmani architecture in existence. The Jama Masjid is notable for its unique design influenced by the Great Mosque of Córdoba in Spain, featuring a covered prayer hall with a forest of pillars and domed bays that creates an extraordinary interior space unlike any other mosque in India.

The Dargah of Hazrat Khwaja Bandanawaz, one of the most important Sufi shrines in South India, is located in Kalaburagi and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually. The saint Syed Mohammed Gesudaraz, known as Bandanawaz, was a highly revered Chishti Sufi who was associated with the Bahmani sultans and whose shrine has been a center of Sufi spirituality in the Deccan for six centuries. The annual Urs festival commemorating the saint is one of the largest religious gatherings in Karnataka, drawing pilgrims of all faiths who come to seek blessings and participate in the rich traditions of Sufi devotional culture.

The economy of Kalaburagi is based on agriculture, trade, and a growing industrial sector. The surrounding region is one of Karnataka's major producers of red gram (pigeon pea), which is a crucial legume crop in the diet of much of South India. The city is a major center for the pulses trade, with large quantities of red gram and other legumes bought and sold in the city's wholesale markets. Cotton and sorghum are also important crops in the region. Industrial development has expanded with the establishment of cement, fertilizer, and textile manufacturing facilities.

The Kalyana Karnataka region, of which Kalaburagi is the center, has historically been one of the most economically backward areas of Karnataka, leading to political movements advocating for greater development investment. In recent years, the state government has made significant efforts to improve infrastructure, educational facilities, and industrial investment in the region. Gulbarga University, now renamed Kalaburagi University, provides higher education across a wide range of disciplines.

Kalaburagi is connected by rail to Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, making it accessible from major cities in the region. The city's remarkable medieval monuments, deep Sufi heritage, and role as the commercial center of northern Karnataka make it an important and historically significant city in the Deccan region of India.
