Current Time in Kapar, Malaysia

Kapar is a town in the district of Klang in the state of Selangor, on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It lies a short distance north of Klang town, on the flat coastal plain that runs down to the Strait of Malacca, in a landscape of oil palm estates, drainage canals, mangrove fringes and expanding suburbs. The climate is equatorial, hot and humid throughout the year with heavy afternoon rain.

The wider Kapar area is home to well over a hundred thousand people and forms part of the Klang Valley, the dense conurbation centred on Kuala Lumpur that contains a large share of Malaysia's population and economic output. Its national significance comes from energy and industry, because one of the largest power stations in the country stands on the coast here, generating electricity for the whole region. Port Klang, the biggest seaport in Malaysia, lies just to the south, and much of the surrounding land is given over to logistics, manufacturing and palm oil processing.

The settlement began as a farming and fishing area and developed seriously in the colonial period, when rubber estates spread across Selangor and workers arrived from southern India and China to work them. Chinese new villages established during the Emergency of the 1950s remain part of the town's fabric. Rubber later gave way to oil palm, and from the 1980s onwards the growth of the Klang Valley and the construction of the power station brought industry, housing schemes and a rapid rise in population.

Kapar has no grand monuments, and its interest lies instead in everyday Malaysian life. Chinese temples with ornate roofs, mosques, Hindu shrines and churches stand within a short distance of one another, reflecting a population of Malay, Chinese and Indian communities. Religious festivals follow one another through the year, from Hari Raya and Chinese New Year to Deepavali and Thaipusam, and each brings open houses, street stalls and decorated streets.

Food is the strongest local attraction. Roadside stalls and coffee shops serve nasi lemak, banana leaf rice, bak kut teh, fresh seafood from the nearby coast and Malay kuih, and the night markets that rotate through the neighbourhoods each week are the social centre of the town. Fishing villages and seafood restaurants along the estuaries a little further north are popular weekend destinations, while mangroves and mudflats attract large numbers of migratory birds.

The main federal route running north from Klang towards Kuala Selangor passes through the town, with bus services and highway links towards Kuala Lumpur and the port, and commuter rail stations in Klang are close at hand. Schools, technical colleges and hospitals serve the area, and university campuses in Klang and Shah Alam are within easy reach.

Kapar is representative of contemporary Malaysia, an industrious, multi ethnic town where plantation history, heavy industry and a strong food culture meet on the edge of a fast growing metropolitan region.
