Karaj
Karaj is the capital of Alborz Province in Iran, located approximately 20 kilometers west of Tehran in the narrow lowland strip between the Alborz Mountains and the central Iranian plateau. With a population of over 1.9 million people in the city and approximately 2.8 million in the metropolitan area, Karaj is one of the largest cities in Iran and forms part of the sprawling Greater Tehran metropolitan region, one of the most densely populated urban agglomerations in the Middle East.
Karaj has ancient roots, with archaeological evidence suggesting human habitation in the area for thousands of years. The city sits in the agriculturally fertile Karaj River valley, and the surrounding region has been known for orchards and agricultural production for centuries. However, the city's rapid modern growth is primarily a 20th-century phenomenon, driven initially by the construction of the Karaj Dam on the Karaj River in 1961, which created the Amir Kabir Reservoir and established the city as a major source of water and hydroelectric power for the Tehran region.
Industrial development began in earnest during the 1960s and 1970s, with Karaj designated as a major satellite industrial city to relieve pressure on Tehran. This led to the establishment of numerous factories and light industries in the city, along with agricultural research institutes that gave Karaj an important role in Iranian agricultural science and food production. The city continued to grow explosively as Tehran's expansion engulfed the suburbs and transformed Karaj from a satellite town into a de facto extension of the megacity.
The Amir Kabir Reservoir and its surrounding landscape provide recreational opportunities for Tehran residents, with skiing resorts in the nearby Alborz Mountains at Dizin and Shemshak drawing winter sports enthusiasts. The Chalous Road, a spectacular mountain highway running from Karaj north through the Alborz range to the Caspian Sea, is considered one of Iran's most scenic drives and passes through dramatic mountain landscapes.
Transportation links between Karaj and Tehran are provided by the Tehran Metro Line 5 and 4, making Karaj the farthest western point on the Tehran rapid transit network, along with highways and bus services.
University of Karaj and Islamic Azad University are among the city's educational institutions, serving a large student population across various disciplines.
Karaj's role as a vital industrial and residential satellite of Tehran, its dramatic mountain backdrop, and its importance as a water resource for the Iranian capital make it a significant and rapidly evolving city in the heart of the Greater Tehran urban landscape.
