Kariega is a city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, lying on the Swartkops River about thirty five kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean coast. It forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan municipality together with Gqeberha and Despatch, and the three towns function as a single urban region. The setting is a valley of low hills covered in thicket vegetation, with a mild maritime climate, moderate rainfall spread through the year and cooling sea breezes in summer.

The city is home to well over two hundred thousand people. It was known for more than two centuries as Uitenhage, a name given when the town was laid out in 1804 during the brief Batavian administration of the Cape, and it was officially renamed Kariega in 2021 after the river that flows through the district, a Khoikhoi name meaning place of water.

Kariega's global significance comes from the motor industry. The Volkswagen Group Africa plant here is the oldest and largest vehicle manufacturing facility on the African continent, producing cars for the domestic market and for export to Europe and elsewhere, and it has anchored an extensive network of component suppliers throughout the metropolitan area. Tyre manufacturing, engineering, food processing and the railway workshops that once served the main line to the interior have also been important.

The town preserves an attractive core of nineteenth century buildings from its period as a colonial administrative and agricultural centre. Cuyler Manor, the restored farmhouse of the first landdrost, operates as a museum of early settler life, and the elegant old railway station houses a transport museum with historic locomotives and carriages. Magennis Park, the Africana Library and a number of Victorian churches and public buildings reflect the town's long history, while the surrounding district holds farms established by British and German settlers in the 1820s and 1850s.

Nature is close at hand. The Groendal Wilderness Area in the Groot Winterhoek mountains offers hiking, mountain biking and dense indigenous forest, the Swartkops estuary is a wetland of international importance for waders and flamingos, and the celebrated Addo Elephant National Park lies within easy reach to the northeast. The beaches and museums of Gqeberha are half an hour away by road.

Transport is provided by minibus taxis and municipal buses, with the N2 national road and the railway linking the city to the port of Gqeberha and its airport. Cape Town lies about eight hundred kilometres west along the Garden Route.

Education is served by schools with long histories, by a campus of a technical and vocational college and by the training programmes of the motor industry, while universities in Gqeberha and Makhanda are nearby.

Daily life brings together Xhosa, Afrikaans and English speaking communities, and the city has a strong sporting culture, particularly in rugby and athletics.

Kariega is important as the industrial heart of the Eastern Cape and as a town where South African manufacturing, settler history and wild landscapes meet.
