Kasugai lies in Aichi Prefecture in central Japan, immediately north-east of Nagoya on the fertile Nobi Plain. The Shonai River flows through the city on its way to Ise Bay, and low wooded hills rise along the northern edge towards the border with Gifu Prefecture. The climate is mild, with hot humid summers and cool winters, and cherry trees line the riverbanks and park paths in spring.

Around three hundred thousand people live here, making Kasugai one of the largest cities in Aichi after Nagoya and Toyohashi. Its importance is closely tied to the Nagoya metropolitan area, one of the great industrial regions of Japan. Kasugai provides housing for tens of thousands of commuters while also hosting substantial manufacturing of its own, including paper, machinery, electronic components and food products.

The area has been settled since ancient times, and its name appears in early records of Owari Province. During the Edo period it lay along important routes into the mountains north of Nagoya, and its villages produced rice, charcoal and pottery clay. The modern city was created in 1943 through the merger of several towns and villages. Its greatest change came in the 1960s and 1970s, when the national housing corporation built Kozoji New Town in the hills on the eastern side of the city, a large planned community of apartment blocks, schools, parks and shopping centres designed to accommodate the rapid growth of the Nagoya region. It remains one of the best-known examples of Japanese new town planning.

Kasugai is proud of its association with Ono no Michikaze, the tenth-century courtier regarded as one of the three greatest calligraphers in Japanese history and the founder of a distinctly Japanese style of writing. He is said to have been born here, and a memorial hall dedicated to him stands in Ochiai Park, which is also known for its irises and seasonal flowers. The park, the Shonai riverside paths, the Utsutsu hills and the city's forest park provide green space, while Nagoya Castle, the Tokugawa Art Museum and the historic castle town of Inuyama, with the oldest surviving keep in Japan, are all a short train ride away.

An unexpected local speciality is the edible cactus. Kasugai has promoted cactus cultivation for decades, and local restaurants and schools serve it in salads, noodles, ice cream and curry, a curiosity that has become a genuine civic emblem. Summer fireworks over the Shonai River, spring cherry blossom viewing and neighbourhood shrine festivals mark the calendar, and the local cuisine follows Nagoya traditions, with miso katsu, flat kishimen noodles and sweet red miso used generously.

Transport is excellent. The JR Chuo Line reaches Nagoya station in about twenty minutes, the Aichi Loop Line and Meitetsu services add further options, and expressways cross the city. Chubu University, one of the larger private universities in the region, has its campus in Kasugai, together with several colleges.

Kasugai offers comfortable, well-planned suburban Japan with easy access to the cultural riches of the Nagoya area.
