Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, situated in the Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level, surrounded by the foothills of the Himalayas. With a metropolitan population of over 1.5 million people, Kathmandu is the political, economic, cultural, and spiritual heart of Nepal and serves as the main gateway for visitors to one of the world's most extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes.
The Kathmandu Valley has been inhabited for at least three thousand years and has been the seat of various dynasties including the Licchavi and Malla kingdoms, whose rulers created the extraordinary artistic and architectural heritage that defines the valley today. During the medieval period, the valley was divided into three rival city-kingdoms, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan, each of which developed its own magnificent royal palace square, temples, and courtyard architecture. The unification of Nepal by Prithvi Narayan Shah in 1768 made Kathmandu the capital of the unified kingdom.
Kathmandu is home to an astonishing density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples in the world and dedicated to Lord Shiva, draws pilgrims from across South Asia. Boudhanath Stupa, with its enormous white dome and all-seeing eyes, is one of the largest stupas in the world and the center of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal. Swayambhunath, popularly known as the Monkey Temple, stands on a hill overlooking the valley and is one of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist monuments in the region. Durbar Squares in all three medieval city-kingdoms contain remarkably preserved royal palaces, temples, and courtyards that rank among Asia's finest historic urban environments.
The city is the base for mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas, including those ascending Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Trekking agencies, gear shops, and adventure tourism infrastructure make Kathmandu the world's premier gateway for Himalayan adventure travel. The Thamel neighborhood is a famous backpacker and tourism hub filled with guesthouses, restaurants, craft shops, and travel agencies.
Transportation within Kathmandu depends heavily on motorcycles, private cars, and buses, with a ring road circling the valley. Tribhuvan International Airport is the only international airport in Nepal and handles all international air traffic, making it essential infrastructure for the country.
Tribhuvan University is Nepal's largest and oldest institution of higher education, along with several private universities that have expanded access to higher education significantly in recent decades.
Kathmandu's extraordinary concentration of ancient temples, living religious traditions, dramatic Himalayan scenery, and warm Nepali hospitality make it one of the most captivating and spiritually resonant cities in all of Asia.
