Kenitra

Kenitra is a city located in northwestern Morocco, situated along the Sebou River near its mouth on the Atlantic coast, approximately 40 kilometers north of Rabat. With a population of approximately 430,000 people, it is one of Morocco's major urban centers and serves as the capital of the Kenitra Province within the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra Region. The city's position between the Atlantic Ocean and the fertile Gharb Plain has shaped its development as an agricultural hub, port city, and increasingly important industrial center.

The area has a long history of human habitation, and nearby archaeological sites reveal the presence of ancient settlements connected to Phoenician and Roman Mediterranean civilizations. The modern city, however, was largely created during the French Protectorate period in the early twentieth century. Under French administration, Kenitra was known as Port Lyautey — named after Marshal Hubert Lyautey, the first French Resident-General in Morocco — and developed as a significant military and naval base as well as a commercial port for the agricultural produce of the Gharb Plain.

During World War II, Kenitra was the site of Operation Torch, the Allied amphibious landings in North Africa in November 1942, which marked the beginning of the Allied campaign to expel Axis forces from the continent. The port and surrounding area saw significant military action during this operation, and the city played a consequential role in one of the most important strategic operations of the war. A small monument marks this historical significance for those who seek it out.

The Sebou River and the nearby Merja Zerga National Park are significant natural features associated with Kenitra. Merja Zerga — meaning "Blue Lagoon" in Darija Arabic — is a coastal lagoon and wetland reserve of international importance for migratory birds. The wetland hosts hundreds of species of waterbirds and is a critical resting point on the East Atlantic Flyway, drawing birdwatchers from across Europe and beyond during the migration seasons.

Kenitra's economy rests on several pillars, including agriculture and agro-food processing, the Kenitra Atlantic Free Zone (which has attracted major automotive and aerospace manufacturing investment), and the port. The nearby free trade zone has drawn significant foreign investment, including from automotive suppliers serving the Renault factory in Tangier, making the greater Kenitra area part of Morocco's emerging manufacturing corridor.

The city is connected to Rabat by train and road, and the new high-speed rail line connecting Casablanca and Tangier passes nearby. As Morocco's economic development continues to accelerate, Kenitra's industrial profile and strategic location ensure its growing importance as one of the country's key urban and economic centers.
