Keszthely is a charming town situated at the western tip of Lake Balaton, the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe, in Zala County in western Hungary. With a population of approximately 20,000 residents, it is one of the most historically and culturally significant towns along Lake Balaton's shores, often described as the "capital" of the lake due to its long history and its status as a year-round settlement rather than a purely seasonal resort.

The town's roots extend to Roman times, when a settlement existed in the area as part of the Pannonia province. However, Keszthely rose to particular prominence in the 18th and early 19th centuries under the patronage of the noble Festetics family, who made it the center of their extensive estates. The Festetics family transformed Keszthely into an intellectual and cultural hub, and their influence is visible throughout the town to this day.

The crown jewel of Keszthely is the Festetics Palace, a magnificent baroque and neoclassical estate complex that is one of the largest and most beautifully preserved aristocratic palaces in Hungary. The palace, built in stages from 1745 onwards, contains over 100 rooms and houses the Helikon Library, a stunning hall holding approximately 90,000 volumes of historical books, manuscripts, and documents. The palace grounds include an English-style park that provides a tranquil setting for leisurely walks.

The Georgikon Farm Museum, also closely associated with the Festetics legacy, celebrates the founding of the Georgikon in 1797 — Europe's first agricultural college, established by Count György Festetics. This pioneering institution reflected the Enlightenment ideals that the family championed, and the museum today offers fascinating insights into the history of agriculture and rural life in the region.

The town's main street, Kossuth Lajos utca, is a pleasant pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops, restaurants, and elegant buildings leading down toward the lakeside promenade. The beach area at Keszthely is expansive and well-equipped, making it a popular destination during the summer months when visitors from across Hungary and neighboring countries come to swim, sail, and relax on the shores of the lake.

Keszthely also has a vibrant cultural calendar. The Helikon Days festival, held each summer, celebrates the cultural legacy of the Festetics family with classical concerts, theatrical performances, and festive events staged in and around the palace gardens, evoking the intellectual gatherings — known as Helikon celebrations — that the count organized in the early 19th century.

The local economy is driven primarily by tourism, with hospitality, thermal spa facilities, and lakeside recreation forming the backbone of commercial activity. The town has a modest but active medical spa culture, benefiting from warm mineral waters found in the region.

Bus and rail connections link Keszthely to Budapest in approximately two and a half to three hours, and ferry services operate during summer months connecting the western and southern shores of the lake.

Keszthely offers a rare combination of aristocratic heritage, natural beauty, and lakeside relaxation that makes it one of the most complete and satisfying destinations along the shores of Lake Balaton.
