Khorramshahr

Khorramshahr is a port city in Khuzestan Province, in the far south-west of Iran, close to the border with Iraq. It stands at the point where the Karun River joins the Arvand Rud, the waterway known in Arabic as the Shatt al-Arab, which flows into the Persian Gulf a short distance downstream. The surrounding country is flat and hot, laced with palm groves and irrigation channels, and the neighbouring port of Abadan lies only a few kilometres away on the same delta.

The city today has a population of around one hundred and seventy thousand, a fraction of what it might have been without the events of the twentieth century. Its population is mixed, with a large Arabic-speaking community alongside Persian speakers and Bakhtiari families, reflecting its position on a cultural frontier. The local economy rests on the port, on trade with Iraq and the Gulf states, on date palm cultivation and on the petrochemical industry concentrated in the wider region.

Known historically as Mohammerah, the town rose to prominence in the nineteenth century under the Arab sheikhs of the Muhaysin, who governed it with considerable autonomy and made it a flourishing centre of river trade. Steamers connected it to Basra, Baghdad and the Gulf, and it was the natural outlet for goods moving up the Karun into the Iranian interior. Renamed Khorramshahr in 1924 as central authority was reasserted, it continued to grow, and by the 1970s it was Iran's busiest commercial port, handling a large share of the country's imports.

That prosperity ended abruptly in September 1980, when Iraqi forces invaded at the start of the Iran-Iraq War. Khorramshahr was besieged and captured after weeks of brutal street fighting so costly to both sides that Iranians came to call it Khuninshahr, the city of blood. It remained under occupation until 24 May 1982, when Iranian forces recaptured it in one of the defining moments of the war. The date is still marked each year as a national holiday, and the liberation of Khorramshahr occupies a central place in modern Iranian memory.

Much of the city was destroyed, and reconstruction has been long and uneven. Visitors today find a mixture of rebuilt districts and preserved ruins deliberately left as memorials. The Jame Mosque, its walls still scarred by shellfire, is the most powerful of these sites, along with the war museum, the Martyrs Memorial and the Congregational Mosque grounds. Riverside walks along the Arvand, the fish and date markets, and the palm plantations outside town give a sense of everyday life, while the Arvand Free Trade Zone has brought new commercial activity.

Local culture blends Persian and Arab traditions in music, poetry and cuisine, with fish dishes, rice and dates prominent on the table. Roads and a railway connect Khorramshahr to Ahvaz, the provincial capital about a hundred kilometres north, and border crossings link it to Basra. Universities in Khorramshahr and nearby Abadan specialise in marine science and technology.

Khorramshahr is important both as a working Gulf port and as a place of remembrance, a city whose resilience continues to resonate throughout Iran.
