Kibaha

Kibaha lies in eastern Tanzania, about forty kilometres west of Dar es Salaam along the main road that climbs inland towards Morogoro and the interior. It is the administrative capital of the Pwani, or Coast, region, set in gently rolling country of red soil, coconut palms, cashew trees and patches of forest between the Indian Ocean and the hills. The climate is hot and humid throughout the year, with long rains from March to May and shorter rains towards the end of the year.

The town has a population of well over a hundred thousand and is growing quickly as the built-up area of Dar es Salaam spreads westwards. Its importance comes from its role as a regional headquarters, from the constant traffic on the highway that carries goods from the port to Zambia, Malawi and the Tanzanian interior, and increasingly from industry and housing that have moved out of the crowded capital.

Kibaha is a modern creation. In the early 1960s, shortly after independence, the newly formed government chose this site for an ambitious development project supported by the Nordic countries, intended to demonstrate what rural improvement could achieve. The Kibaha Education Centre was built with Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish assistance and combined a secondary school, a health centre, a farmers training institute and a rural library in a single campus. A hospital followed at Tumbi, and the settlement grew around these institutions, later becoming a district and then the regional capital.

The town has few conventional monuments, but the education centre and its memorial to the Nordic partnership remain a point of local pride. Travellers know Kibaha above all for its roadside fruit markets, where stalls piled with pineapples, oranges, mangoes, coconuts and cassava line the highway and buses stop so passengers can buy the produce for which the area is famous. Nearby attractions include the Ruvu River and its forest reserves, the Pugu hills with their caves and bats, the old Swahili and German colonial town of Bagamoyo on the coast, and Saadani National Park to the north, the only Tanzanian park where wildlife comes down to an ocean beach.

Local life is Swahili in language and culture, with a strong Muslim and Christian presence side by side. Markets, football fields and open-air bars form the centres of social life, and food is based on rice, ugali, grilled fish and meat, coconut sauces and cassava. Cashew nuts, oranges and pineapples from the district are traded across the country.

The Morogoro highway and a modern bus rapid transit corridor now connect Kibaha to Dar es Salaam, and both the central railway and the port and international airport of the capital are within easy reach. The education centre, teacher training colleges and campuses of national institutions give the town a role in learning that goes back to its founding.

Kibaha is significant as the fast-growing gateway between Tanzania's largest city and its interior, and as a place created deliberately to advance rural education and health.
