Kirāri Sulemānnagar

Kirāri Sulemānnagar is a large residential settlement on the northwestern edge of Delhi, the capital territory of India, lying between Nangloi and Rohini on the flat alluvial plain of the Yamuna basin. Administratively it is classified as a census town within North West Delhi, and it forms part of the continuous built up area of one of the largest metropolitan regions in the world. The climate is that of the northern plains, with fierce summer heat that can exceed forty five degrees, a humid monsoon from July to September, and cold, often foggy winter mornings.

With a population approaching three hundred thousand, it is one of the most populous census towns in India, a statistical category that reflects places which function as cities without having formal municipal status of their own. Its growth has been rapid and largely unplanned, following the pattern of many settlements on Delhi's periphery, where agricultural land was subdivided into small plots and built over as migrants arrived from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan in search of work.

The result is a dense, energetic and predominantly working class neighbourhood of narrow lanes, three and four storey houses, small workshops and busy street markets. Successive government programmes have regularised many of the colonies here and extended piped water, sewerage, electricity and paved roads, though monsoon waterlogging and traffic congestion remain familiar challenges.

The economy is built on the labour and enterprise of its residents. Small scale manufacturing, garment stitching, packaging, printing, furniture making and vehicle repair are carried on in workshops throughout the area, while many residents commute to the industrial estates of Mundka, Bawana and Narela or to jobs in construction, transport and retail across the capital. Local markets are lively and inexpensive, and the food culture reflects the mixed origins of the population, with north Indian, Bihari and Punjabi dishes side by side.

Community life revolves around temples, gurudwaras and mosques, around cricket played on any available open ground, and around the festivals of Diwali, Holi, Chhath Puja, Eid and Guru Nanak Jayanti, the last two of which are celebrated with particular energy in these northwestern neighbourhoods.

Transport has improved substantially. The Delhi Metro serves the area from stations at Nangloi, Rithala and elsewhere on the Green and Red Lines, and buses and shared autorickshaws provide dense local coverage. The Outer Ring Road and the expressways to Rohtak and Bahadurgarh pass nearby, and Indira Gandhi International Airport is about an hour away.

Government and private schools serve the population, and the many colleges of Delhi University and other institutions across the capital are accessible by metro, giving young residents access to some of the best education in the country.

Kirāri Sulemānnagar is not a tourist destination, but it is significant as an example of the rapidly urbanising periphery of Delhi, and its residents live within easy reach of the monuments, museums and opportunities of one of the great historic capitals of Asia.
