Kitchener
Kitchener lies in south-western Ontario, Canada, on the Grand River about a hundred kilometres west of Toronto. With around two hundred and sixty thousand residents it is the largest city in the Region of Waterloo, forming a continuous urban area with the neighbouring cities of Waterloo and Cambridge that together house more than half a million people.
The first settlers arrived around 1800: Pennsylvania German Mennonites who travelled north by covered wagon in search of land and religious freedom, followed within a generation by immigrants from the German states. The village they founded was called Berlin, and German remained widely spoken into the twentieth century. In 1916, amid anti-German feeling during the First World War, a bitterly contested vote changed the name to Kitchener after the British field marshal. The German heritage survives most visibly in the Oktoberfest held every October, the largest Bavarian festival outside Germany, with beer halls, a parade and hundreds of thousands of visitors, and in the Old Order Mennonite communities of the surrounding countryside, whose horse-drawn buggies are a common sight on rural roads.
Manufacturing built the modern city, from rubber and furniture to meat packing and appliances. In recent decades Kitchener has reinvented itself as one of Canada's leading technology centres. The corridor between here and Toronto is often called Canada's technology triangle, and a global search company chose a converted rubber factory downtown for its largest Canadian engineering office. Startup incubators, education software firms and a dense network of accelerators occupy the old industrial buildings, while insurance and financial services remain major employers.
Education underpins that success. The University of Waterloo, a short distance north, is world renowned for computer science, engineering and mathematics and runs the largest cooperative education programme anywhere, sending students on paid work terms around the world. Wilfrid Laurier University adds business and arts strength, Conestoga College trains skilled workers, and a downtown health sciences campus hosts pharmacy and medical education.
Visitors find plenty to enjoy. Victoria Park, with its lake and pavilion, hosts festivals through the year, the Kitchener Market has operated since the town's earliest days and still draws Mennonite farmers each Saturday, and the nearby St. Jacobs market is one of the largest year-round farmers markets in Canada. THEMUSEUM offers interactive exhibitions, the Centre in the Square is home to the region's symphony orchestra, and the Joseph Schneider Haus preserves an 1816 Mennonite farmhouse as a living history site. Junior hockey inspires deep loyalty, and the Grand River offers canoeing and trails.
The ION light rail line, opened in 2019, links Kitchener with Waterloo, and commuter trains, intercity rail, a regional airport and the major highways connect the city to Toronto and the American border.
Historic, entrepreneurial and increasingly diverse, Kitchener is one of the most dynamic mid-sized cities in Canada.
