Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a major port city located on the southwestern coast of India in the state of Kerala. Situated on a cluster of islands and peninsulas in a natural harbor opening onto the Arabian Sea, Kochi is the commercial capital of Kerala and one of India's most important and historically significant port cities. With a population of approximately 700,000 in the city and over two million in the greater urban agglomeration, Kochi is the most economically significant city in Kerala and one of the major urban centers of southern India.

Kochi's history as a center of international trade goes back over two thousand years, but it was the arrival of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 that marked the beginning of European colonization in India. Today, Kochi is a dynamic modern city that has preserved its historic core while developing rapidly as a business and technology hub. The Cochin Special Economic Zone and Infopark Kochi are important centers of IT and business process operations, attracting national and international companies and providing employment to thousands of professionals. The Port of Kochi is one of India's busiest natural harbors and handles significant volumes of cargo and container traffic.

Kochi is also gaining international recognition as a center for contemporary art. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, launched in 2012, is India's first and largest international contemporary art exhibition and has placed the city on the global art world map.
