Konya

Konya is the capital city of Konya Province in the south-central part of Anatolia, Turkey, situated on the Anatolian Plateau at an elevation of approximately 1,016 meters above sea level. With a population of approximately 2.2 million people, it is one of the largest cities in Turkey and one of the most historically rich, serving for centuries as an important center of Islamic culture, Sufi mysticism, and Seljuk architectural achievement.

Konya is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with the nearby Catalhoyuk Neolithic site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, documenting human settlement in the region dating back approximately 9,000 years. Through the Hittite, Phrygian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods, the city maintained its importance as a regional center, known in ancient times as Iconium. Under the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in the 12th and 13th centuries, Konya reached the peak of its political and cultural significance as the capital of this powerful Islamic state that controlled much of Anatolia.

Konya's most enduring legacy and the defining source of its spiritual significance is its association with Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet, Sufi mystic, and Islamic scholar universally known as Rumi or Mevlana. Rumi lived the second and most productive half of his life in Konya, and his tomb, housed in the Mevlana Museum complex, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world. Millions of visitors, both devout pilgrims and cultural tourists, come to Konya each year to pay their respects at Rumi's tomb. The Mevlevi Sufi Order that Rumi's followers established gave rise to the famous Sema ceremony featuring the whirling dervishes, whose distinctive spinning meditation practice has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Islamic spiritual culture worldwide.

The city preserves an exceptional array of Seljuk architecture, including the Alaeddin Mosque, the Ince Minare Medrese with its elaborately carved portal, the Karatay Medrese housing a stunning ceramic tile collection, and the Sirali Medrese, all reflecting the height of Seljuk artistic achievement in stone and tile.

Konya is also one of Turkey's most important agricultural and industrial cities, producing grain, sugar, and food products from the fertile Konya Plain, while manufacturing and construction industries contribute to the modern economy.

Transportation includes Konya Airport with domestic connections, the high-speed rail line connecting Konya to Ankara and Istanbul, and an urban tram system.

Konya's unique combination of ancient human heritage, magnificent Islamic architectural legacy, and its status as the city of Rumi make it one of the most spiritually resonant and historically layered destinations in all of Turkey and the Islamic world.
