Korla

Korla, known in Chinese as Ku'erle, is a prefecture-level city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. Located in the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture — the largest prefecture-level division in China by area — Korla sits at the northern edge of the Tarim Basin, along the Kongque (Peacock) River, at the foot of the Tianshan (Heavenly Mountains) range. Its position at the gateway between the Tianshan and the vast Taklimakan Desert gives it a dramatic and strategically important setting.

With a population of around 600,000 people, Korla is the second-largest city in Xinjiang after Urumqi and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Bayingolin Prefecture. The city is ethnically diverse, home to Uyghur, Han Chinese, Mongolian, and Hui communities, reflecting the broader multicultural mosaic of the Xinjiang region. This diversity is expressed in the city's food culture, architecture, and daily social life.

Korla's history is ancient. The area lies along one of the principal branches of the Silk Road, the legendary network of trade routes that connected China to Central Asia, Persia, and the Mediterranean world for over a millennium. Archaeological discoveries in the Tarim Basin nearby have unearthed remarkably preserved mummies and artifacts suggesting early Indo-European settlement. The city's modern development accelerated dramatically with the discovery of substantial oil and natural gas reserves in the Tarim Basin during the 20th century.

The most distinctive natural attraction near Korla is the Peacock River (Kongque He), which flows through the city in a striking gorge and supports a rare riparian forest of Euphrates poplars — a UNESCO-recognized ecological treasure. The Tianshan Grand Canyon, accessible from Korla, offers breathtaking red rock formations and gorges that rival landscapes found in the American Southwest. The nearby Bosten Lake, the largest inland freshwater lake in China, provides scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.

Korla is famous throughout China and beyond for a particular variety of fragrant pear — the Korla fragrant pear (Kuerle xiangli) — prized for its thin skin, crisp flesh, and sweet aroma. This fruit has become the city's most recognizable cultural and agricultural symbol, celebrated in an annual pear festival that draws visitors from across the region. Museums and cultural centers in the city preserve the heritage of the Silk Road and Xinjiang's diverse peoples.

The city is well connected by the Southern Xinjiang Railway linking it to Urumqi and beyond, as well as by the Korla Tajikistan Highway system extending into the Tarim Basin. Korla Airport provides air connections to major Chinese cities. Roads connect Korla to oilfield facilities scattered across the vast surrounding desert.

Korla is home to Tarim University, a major agricultural research institution, along with several vocational colleges and technical schools serving the region's energy and agricultural industries.

As a center of oil production, Silk Road heritage, ecological wonder, and ethnic diversity, Korla occupies a singular place in China's vast western frontier. Its blend of ancient trade route history and modern energy economy make it one of Xinjiang's most compelling and consequential urban centers.
