Kotli
Kotli is a city and district capital in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), a self-governing territory administered by Pakistan, situated in the Pir Panjal region of the western Himalayas. Located along the Poonch River in a mountainous valley, Kotli is home to approximately 80,000 residents in the city proper, with the broader district supporting a population of over 600,000 people. The city serves as the administrative and commercial center of Kotli District, one of the largest districts in Azad Kashmir.
The history of Kotli is deeply intertwined with the turbulent history of the Kashmir region. Prior to partition, the area was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the partition of British India in 1947 and the first Indo-Pakistani War, the territory came under Pakistani administration and eventually became part of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region. The city has developed within the unique political context of this disputed territory, maintaining its own government under the framework of AJK's special status within Pakistan.
The natural setting of Kotli is exceptionally beautiful. The city is surrounded by forested hills, rushing rivers, and dramatic mountain landscapes that are characteristic of the Himalayan foothills. The Poonch River and its tributaries flow through the district, carving scenic valleys and providing water resources for agriculture and daily life. The landscape supports agriculture including wheat, maize, and various fruits, and the forests above the valleys contain pine and other mountain tree species.
The Kotli region has a significant diaspora connection with the United Kingdom. A large number of people from Kotli and the broader Mirpur Division of AJK emigrated to Britain, particularly to cities such as Birmingham, Bradford, and Manchester, beginning in the 1950s and 1960s. This diaspora has maintained strong cultural and economic ties with their home region, and remittances from the UK diaspora play a meaningful role in the local economy.
Despite its remote mountain location, Kotli has developed a reasonable level of urban infrastructure including educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and government offices. The city functions as the economic hub for the surrounding rural communities, with local markets trading agricultural produce, livestock, and everyday goods.
The Kotli district is home to several colleges and schools providing secondary and higher education to the local population. Mirpur University of Science and Technology has a campus in the broader region, contributing to technical and scientific education in Azad Kashmir.
Road connections link Kotli to Mirpur, Rawalpindi, and other major centers, though the mountainous terrain makes transportation challenging in some parts of the district.
Kotli is a city shaped by mountain geography, a complex political history, and the bonds of community that stretch across continents. Its natural beauty and the resilience of its people make it a distinctive place in the broader mosaic of the Kashmir region.
